Re: Higher Being

I'm getting an Exorcist/Twilight Zone/Wiggly People feel from this story. The higher power is enslaved to the psychotic kid, though, instead of the reverse. Does "it" in the story refer to the same "it" throughout, or is it shifting as the story goes on? I'm assuming the evil swing is not the power...

I never knew my mom. But I love stepmum. She gives the best of herself. I'm lucky to have such a good intestine to call home.

Higher Being (Simulations Theme)

It liked the swings. Andrew got me to push. “Higher,” it’d say. Parents complained it wasn’t safe to let Andrew play with the other children. After, the remaining adults decided free-range parenting was best. It got bored of swings. Andrew likes birds. It made me name them first. They needed names t...

Re: Sand in your Eyes

Okay, the revision is hilarious and first-rate! It got one of those loud, uncontrolled braying laughs outta me. The neighbors know I'm crazy now, thank you very much. ;) I have no idea if this is necessary, but you might want to edit the original post to include the new version (keep the old versio...

Re: Sand in your Eyes

Sure, I'll take a swing at a crit! I really got hung up on "non-heart bits" the first time I read it; that was probably the source of most of my rereading. For some reason, I didn't connect it to "my heart sank" and kept picturing the mermaids holding up cartoon non-hearts. It also took me a bit to...

Re: Sand in your Eyes

On Gaiman's Sandman, have you finished the series yet? SO good. Ah, to read it for the first time again. I pull them out every year or so and am always mesmerized. Did you know that Gaiman is writing another run of 'em starting in October? I know when authors revisit beloved works after so much tim...

Re: Trailer Trash

There were a number of Anti-Nazi Warner Bros cartoons, though the ones I've seen have been Daffy Duck rather than Bugs Bunny, however that does not mean that there aren't Bugs Bunny toons that do the same. I have not, by any means, seen all of the original shorts, so I can't be sure. Disney did the...

Re: Sand in your Eyes

This is hyper-surreal, as the Master of Dreams should be. I had to read it several times to get a handle on it, I must admit. Any chance you've read Neil Gaiman's "Sandman" graphic novels? Even more so than the Sandman himself, your story made me think of Delirium, which is always a good thing. :D ...

Flicking her tail, the mermaid beckoned me into emerald surf. Salt-rimmed lips approached mine, even as a seashell slipped - The crunch of a potato crisp. Salt-rimmed lips – A gurgling slurp. A chintz armchair bobbed behind me, its occupant blowing on a struggling teacup. I flushed, suddenly aware ...

Re: Knock Knock

Something about this removes the mystery of the first one for me, but deepens a different one. I like that we switched perspectives, and now I'mm thinking how a few of my own drabbles or indeed, works, might look from another character's viewpoint. Or heck, another noun's viewpoint. Picture dinner f...

How about people the author doesn't care for? ...People and ideas that didn't fit, weren't interesting enough or entertaining enough. Damn, what a terrible idea. I feel like this would, simultaneously, make an AWESOME novel plot and a TERRIBLE one. The Island of Misfit Plots. 'Fess up, everyo...

Re: Improved Stars (Relocation theme)

This is beautiful. I get a strong sense of ambivalence upon reading: if half the people vanish and half stay, who has it better off, really? Should you wish for the unknown, or mourn the fact that you weren't among the chosen? This combined with the thought that her husband may have chosen the impr...
