The Roller Rink

Spinning, multicolored lights, Lady Gaga and fog from smoke machines fills the roller rink. Awkward teenagers, and a few parents, make endless laps with their flirts and conversations. Some reel and some lilt through the soft focus going round and round in the ether. Up above, in the booth, sits the...

Emerson Lake and Palmer

Officer Palmer drove down the long, gravel road to Emerson Lake. It was the humidity that made the 101 degree day run slow. A cloud of dust caught up with him as he slowed and stopped his old Bronco near the water. In the reeds and grasses near the water's edge, it held a body (two dripping boys had...

Re: The Walls Have Ears (Gumshoe theme)

Before I finished reading the last sentence I expected the Detective to be the werewolf himself, that being why he never solved the crimes. Therefore, I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Re: The Visa Bill

Hmm—I hadn't looked at it like that. I was referring to the fact that many suicide notes often contain the most mundane details, like: "I just filled the car up," or "The milk in the fridge is about to expire," or "The Visa bill came today." I think it is all the more moving to hear someone's unbear...

Re: The Visa Bill

I have no idea who W.C.W. is or why you ate my visa bill.
At any rate, I assume you are comparing to one among the greatest and most moving suicide note writers of all time; especially great considering he only wrote one.

O'Riley threw back another pint. Six more and he collapsed dead in peanut shells. Doc Sean determined he died of thirst.

The Visa Bill

I will say that this is purely fiction, inspired by real events. This is a message to the world: My mind is a bright, shining galaxy of stars which are going dark one by one. My heart has become a black hole, a singularity under which hope once had footholds. I am suffering. This misery I am in is i...

Octopus's Garden

The octopus grooved its way along the sandy bottom, looking for seashells to add to its garden. Sometimes it would sashay up to a coral outgrowth and disappear. Sometimes it would become blue and white rings, growing and vanishing. Then, later, it might have some crab legs. Many humans consider the ...

Mugwumps

Three Mugwumps gathered round a triangle of fire on the bare earth. One, in mustard yellow robes, said the seal should remain unbroken. One, in scarlet robes, said the seal should be reaffirmed for the year to come. One, in royal blue robes, disagreed. One brought pure gold to offer. One brought red...

Re: Midnight snack.

I am infatuated with the idea of the creepy thing or scary thing being right there but someone not knowing it. A neck-biting thing is horrific, but the character picked it up. And comforted it! That to me is scary. Thanks for the drabble.

Elder Wisdom

“Yes, your feet are very tired,” the old man elongated. The lines in his face were eroded by time. His features had dignity, such as is not born today. “You have searched for what you are, but it is yourself you are running from.” Daylight shone through the walls of the longhouse, but he could still...

Lucy

“Morning, Lucy,” her nurse said, “How are you feeling?” “I'm glad to be out of the ICU,” Lucy said flatly, tiredly. “It's full of sick people.” She meant it. She didn't like being around sick people. “Your fever is still high,” noted the nurse. “I'm so tired—I . . .” she trailed off. Lucy stared at ...

Under an overpass, three pop tents glowed by the light of an open fire. Helicopter blades provided counterpoint to battering trains, and the penitentiary lights' haze suffocated the night's sky. Four or five men enjoyed the cool evening breeze on their backs, swirling with the radiant warmth of the ...

How I love the smell of your hair in the warm sunshine! How the greens and browns of your eyes sparkle in the light! When the breeze moves through the tops of the trees it whispers of you. Your laughter gives me strength of heart. As I sit in the cool evening air you find me. In the midday heat you ...

I didn't know what I wanted until I wanted you. You are lovely in so many ways. How long will you delight my expectations? Can I in good conscience be the one you love? Do you not desire more than I am? But I do love you so. If I'm loved by you I will give you everything you love. Your peace is my p...

Lilting through your mind are wintry winds and smells of wet straw. The rush of summer is over, and you have gathered more fruits and vegetables than you could ever eat alone. You give them away to friends by the boxful. And a quaint tradition draws you in for yet another season—the corn maze. Loomi...

Wounded, exhausted, defeated, he hauled himself out of the tumultuous sea. They had fought desperately to drive him away. Merciless, they wielded weapons made in 'his honor.'
