The Body
The body was never found. I know, because I still have it. I keep it in my walk-in freezer, hanging from a meat hook. Nobody questioned me buying the meat hook, which is weird since I followed it up by not buying meat at any point. Vegetarian, don’t you know. You’d think that would be suspicious, wo...

He was cast out...
…and he was neither seen nor heard from ever again, ‘round these parts. Nor will he ever be. Our town’s vigilant, we’ll make a point of that. No one can remember what it was he did to deserve our collective scorn, but whatever it was, it must’ve been awful. After all, our community doesn’t make mist...

Something Went Extinct Today
…don’t worry, it wasn’t anything good. A little bird, red and yellow, in a part of the world you’ve never heard of. It’s habitat was ploughed under to make room for a mine that we all agree we need resources from. The last of the species died, alone and afraid, in a nest built in part of a tractor. ...

Recovery
There is no greater feeling, in my opinion, than the moment after having been sick for a week that I realize I’m starting to pull through. Still aching, still coughing, my voice nowhere near back, likely won’t be back for another week, but still, compared to last week it’s an incalculable improvemen...
Re: Ideas
nothing wrong with orphaned ideas! my own plot makes zero sense this year for nano. of course, neither did my first book and that wound up coming out, so "the plot is nonsense" is clearly not a deal breaker in my case

Ideas
Ideas are easy to come by. They’re out there in the world, laying about, waiting to be picked up by an enterprising mind. You can find them everywhere you look, if you’re paying attention. All you need to do is see the world as it is, wonder “what if it was other?” and proceed. It’s exactly that sim...

The Hometown Hero
At the corner of the bar he sits, head down, nursing his beer. The scholarship had come, but while he’d been on the starting lineup that first year the scouts had paid him no mind. In hindsight, he should’ve paid more attention during the actual classes. Still, the mill wasn’t bad. His old man had w...

is it sad that I have only heard of Schodringers cat because of the big bang theory not sad to me. i knew it as an explanation of the observer principal in psyche rather than anything regarding quantum physics for about a decade. you can really only be expected to know the specific sciences you've ...

Autobiographical enough, yeah! Tho' I admit, the Joel Osteen thing hurts a tadVarda wrote:Niiice. Autobiographical?

Talent
I’m a man of many talents. A fair writer, decent actor and good-ish comedian. But my greatest talent, if I had to choose, is my talent for self-deception. Which is convenient since, of them all, it’s the talent I find time to use every single day. I tell myself I’ll be okay. I tell myself I deserve ...

If the isotope decays, the cat dies, if not it lives, and there’s no way to be certain which until the box is opened and the cat observed. If it’s dead, good. If not, the box is rigged with explosives, there are snipers on the nearby rooftop and, worst case, I am myself heavily armed. There’s a 50/5...

My Robots (Somebody's Got to Do it Themed)
I’ve built a robot, with a smaller robot inside. And a smaller robot in there. And another in there. It’s smaller robots all the way down, basically. Like Russian nesting dolls. It took a lot of design work, but I think it was worthwhile. Take them apart if you’d like, somebody eventually will, the ...

My Career as a Travel Agent Was Not a Long One (Tourism)
The Robocop Movies weren’t actually filmed in Detroit, which makes Robocop tourism there difficult. “Difficult,” however, isn’t “impossible.” After all, not one moment of Brokeback Mountain was filmed in Wyoming, but they used it for tourism. Tourism’s a good way to help a flagging economy. And, fro...

My Apprentice
I’ve taken an apprentice. He’ll be helping out around the place. Tidying, picking up dry cleaning, cooking meals, washing dishes, and so forth. If I need to go out, he’ll chauffeur me and wait while I run whatever errand I need or, more likely, he’ll run the errand for me. I’ll be getting him some k...
