A Giving Spirit

She raised her hand, palm up, and the delicate paper bird flew away. "Whose is that, honey?" her father asked. "Sarah's. She pulled my hair today, so I'm giving her the bird. I'm giving one to everybody who made me mad." Her father chuckled, then drew in breath to clarify the idiom. His breath caugh...

Maybe the original name was Micah 1:4 - "The mountains melt beneath Him,and the valleys split apart, like wax before a fire, like water rushing from a steep place."

Thanks! I had the idea while watching 'The Woman in Black.' I figured reverse psychology might be useful in a haunting.

how to deal

I always scream upon opening my underwear drawer. I feign terror when I come home to a tidy house, and if there's a hot dinner on the table I hide in my bed (at least until the food cools a bit). A clean car gets a fainting spell, while a trimmed lawn merits a fake heart attack. Anything can be addr...

Good point, though I only ever imagined a light-bending effect (which would end up the same, except you'd be standing on black footprints all the time - no light to bend between foot and ground).

So yeah. I met God the other day. He's okay. Makes a mean caramel mocha. Has a Karmann Ghia.

Re: Pet Stains

Very nice. It hearkens back to the 'Hitchhiker's Guide' vignette about a mathematical error causing an entire alien invasion to be swallowed by a dog. I always liked that bit, but I actually prefer this way - treating it as a slice of domestic life. Also, your 'sound effects' remind me of every cat ...

Re: Drabblecast 213 - The Haunter of the Dark

Big Lovecraft fan. I think I have all his published, extant work. Granted, some of them seem more like revisions of earlier stories than original work, but I like all of them.

@Unblinking: agreed, it's hard to beat 'Erich Zann,' though I would propose 'Pickman's Model' as a contender...

Re: Drabblecast 216 - The Book of Eternity

I'm a fan of Mike Resnick. This was not my favorite story of his, but it did have the distinction of being a Resnick story that did not make me want to cry. While I enjoy a story well told and don't always expect a twist, I think this one could have benefited from a dusting of M. Night. A veer...

We cured it. We simply didn’t know. When the eldest races struck, twelve twisted kids lived. See, polio was the vaccine.
