Drabblecast 282 – Liane The Wayfarer

Through the dim forest came Liane the Wayfarer, passing along the shadowed glades with a prancing light-footed gait. He whistled, he caroled, he was plainly in high spirits. Around his finger he twirled a bit of wrought bronze—a circlet graved with angular crabbed characters, now stained black.By excellent chance he had found it, banded around the root of an ancient yew. Hacking it free, he had seen the characters on the inner surface—rude forceful symbols, doubtless the cast of a powerful antique rune . . . Best take it to a magician and have it tested for sorcery.

Twabble: “ Four times they took him. Every time an anal probe. Now he was prepared. Every night he ate three fortune cookies. Whole. ” by Lyda

I love how none of the characters are "Good guys". Will definitely be checking out the 'Dying Earth" series now!

Yeay! You liked my twabble.

If I ever reach the bar again, please forgive me for pointing out I'm just "Lyda." I'm not complaining - I always view it as generosity. The inherent kindness in most people inspires them to give my name an extra letter or two. I think it's kind of sweet really and feel bad for pointing it out. But just the four letters are fine. Besides, we should really be donating our extra letters to those poor people in the Balkans.

Thanks for picking the story and thanks for being generous!

How about fixing that it is not a twabble! Someone grabbed the wrong version and I guess a moose ate my PM to Norm, out in the sulfurous snows of Wyoming? :?

Honestly I'm confused by the twabble, Lyda -

Is the goal to give the aliens fortunes to read? Just don't see why I guess....

Done. It may take a bit for the cache to update.

Regarding the wrong text, sorry, that was at least partially my fault for posting it wrong in so many ways. In the future I'll try and do the editing work *before* posting.

I did kind of cheat and gave it a title, "You want answers?" in the twabble thread.

As for the goal, I was working on the "strange stories, by strange authors, for strange listeners" theme. He'd been taken four times and they still hadn't found an answer - he figured the stream of fortunes they got if there was a fifth time might reduce the chances of a sixth time.

Is that a logical belief? Perhaps, perhaps not, but give the guy a break. He's a bit traumatised. It took several weeks before he could actually *sit* and eat those fortune cookies after all.

Fine story selection. I liked the Drabble's allusion to pulling yourself out of the (innerwebz) abyss by pulling your own hair (out).

I'm pretty sure I read the Vance story, decades ago. So, I wasn't too surprised by the twists. The narration and background music was great, per usual. There was a bit of fridge logic in how Chun managed to get Liane in his refuge or why he would collect eyeballs in the first place or how he could avoid being slain for the vile monster he appeared to be. (Retroactive spoiler alert, BTW). But, the story was otherwise: short, tidy, and devious. And, since there where no good guys, any character getting cheated by logic problems was no irritating loss.

The twabble really was a head-scratcher without the "clue" provided by its title.
Seems like that plan could backfire disastrously, too. For example, when I was a kid and learned that fortune cookies had slips of sayings that were occasionally funny, and always thoughtful (to a five-year-old), I cracked open a whole bag of the things -- much to my mother's (and my backside's) dismay.

Good episode, overall.

That was an awesome episode. I was expecting common fantasy tropes and very much enjoyed the twists.

I am tempted to start calling myself El Barto the Unavoidable. If only I could find a cloak of eyeballs in the Skymall catalog.

Still chucking about the fortune cookies too.

Thumbs (and eyeballs) up all around!

Folks,

I would just like to say, thanks for producing one of my all-time-ever favourite Jack Vance stories.

Honestly kids, go read all of the "Dying Earth" stories because noone ever wrote like Jack Vance. :)

Now, Drabblecast. If you could just read the whole of "The Eyes of the Overworld" (aka Cugel the Clever) followed by "Cugel's Saga" in its entirety, I would be complete.

This was a good fantasy story for the reason Norm stated- it didn't follow the tropes. It did come precariously close to being a fairy tale, but held just enough back.
