Unholy Fruit by Kurt Kirchmeier

The demon oranges- one for every tree in Roland’s orchard- appeared on an otherwise average Tuesday morning...

Very entertaining episode this week. Good opportunity to judge the value of "enhanced production values", which were largely absent in this one. For me the result was I missed them so much that I imagined them. But not only the sounds. I guess because Norm had just reminded me of Bo Kaier's great artwork, I really wanted to see his rendition of the horned orange-tree demons.

In fact, having checked out Bo's flash animation sample, I find myself wondering if the day will come when we might see another flash dimension added to the Drabblecast. Two words: Hayao Miyazaki. Call it Studio Wiggly.

Norm, I think you could be huge in Japan! Your oranges would be the size of grapefruits!

Haha spot on! I actually left some gaps for sound effects (gun clicks, screen doors being ripped off, demon chomping, etc) and forgot to put them in before throwing the episode up (crazy week). I was gonna take it down and throw those in and then noticed it was actually pretty effective without them, because like you said, you kind of imagine them anyways. So I just left it as is.

Yah, I wish we could get Bo to draw storylines every week- that'd be awesome. He's a busy guy though.

Yeah, I liked this one. Not only did I find myself putting in the sound effects myself, I even unconsciously added a soundtrack. I've been listening to a lot of Pseudopod flash lately, and they do a lot of that.

I'd go so far as to record it, but the only instrument I play well is the trumpet. Does anyone know where I can buy an electronica?

I forgot to say I also enjoyed the Drabble this week. The end was pretty obvious once the setting was in place, but that just made the whole thing more enjoyable.

Well, for the listener anyway.

Anyway, it finally gave me the idea I've been looking for to write my own drabble. Yay me!

Unholy Fruit - Simply, my favorite drabblecast story this year. More horror, claws, teeth and demonic fruit, please.

Okay, cammo, we need to see the drabble inspired by "Unholy Fruit". You've had a month. What's the status?

Actually, the drabble was inspired by the drabble before Unholy Fruit. In that story the protagonist died, and I figured a very short form lends itself to stories where people die unexpectedly. So I came up with 'Cut Short' which isn't strictly drabble -- it's only 99.5 words long.

Reading it through it probably lends itself to audio more than reading. In fact, early versions of it kept repeating 'TICK! TICK! TICK!' throughout. But I needed the words, so I cut them (so to speak).

So I present to you, 'Cut Short'

**************************

Thirty seconds. Okay. I learnt about these in the Academy. All I have to do is find the wire between the battery and the explosive and cut it an inch above the connection to the timer. Easy!

Now, the yellow one goes to the timer. The black one is going to the battery, so an inch goes to... here.

Oh, wait. I can't cut there. There's another wire attached! That must be a decoy. I don't want to cut that one.

Well, if I come back a bit, and cut it right before the solder joint... Right! Here goes noth

The Drabble Taliban enforcers told Norm that Drabble had to be EXACTLY 100 words. Don't know if 99 1/2 qualifies. You may have to complete your pronoun to comply. But very good drabble concept either way. A small percussive taste of the 'Going Out of Existence' experience. So without further adieu...Well done!

I liked this story. Rarely do stories effectively pull off this type of mood.

Kevin, your pumpkins and Kurt's oranges should team up as a violent orange vegetation squad of some sort.

That could be the follow up to 'Black and White Animals.'

Shouldn't someone first check with Norm to see if he does veggie voices?
