As the colony ship lifted off, ferrying that first batch of colonists out of our galaxy to live among the stars, it was impossible to deny. The future had arrived, and it was everything I’d dreamed it would be as a child, back in the twentieth century.

I sat, looking out the window of my rest home, and smiled, trying to imagine the lives the people on that ship would live, so different from my own.

I wouldn’t see much of the future, but I was glad I lived to see it arrive.

I closed my eyes and drifted off…

No snappy punchline, but I like it. It reminds me (in an inverse way) of my memories of the wonder I felt at watching the moon landing back when I was six years old.

I like the concept and I like the change of pace.

The first two sentences need a little attention because they are a touch disjointed, and they are the crux of the drabble.

But again I notice no sign of stuffing in the Drabble box. The force is with this one.

Aw, this one makes me all emo and stuff. In a good way on your part. I dream of going to the stars and the thought of being unable because it takes so long I'm a doddering oldster makes me sad.

I'm meandering a bit, but the point is that this was very effective. And now I'm going to put on my old man pants, and stinky cologne.
