It was a beautiful day, but Arthur couldn't feel the breeze. The motors of his medical exoskeleton whined, and filtered air filled his lungs. Nutrients fed him through intravenous shunts. His limbs were atrophied, and a single breath of fresh air would send him into anaphylactic shock. He was a failure of evolution, kept alive by the monstrous contraption that imprisoned him.

He punched in the emergency release code. The exoskeleton peeled away, and he fell forward on fragile limbs. Wheezing, he crawled into the sunlight.

The exoskeleton stood helplessly, drops of nutrient fluid falling from its needles like tears.
