Mother's Son

I visited my father in the asylum. He hadn’t spoken in years. This time, however, he leaned in close and whispered, “Listen to me. Your ‘mother’ created me as an instrument to take over the world, to do her biding. But I was a prototype, flawed.

“She learned from her mistakes and in you, achieved perfection. You have the power to save the world, or crush it.” He yelled, shaking my shoulders, “don’t become her puppet!”

The orderlies subdued him. I returned, crying, to mother, who waited outside.

She smiled pleasantly, wiping away my tears, “Don’t cry, mommy’s still here.”
