Untold

Post by Scattercat » Tue Jan 18, 2011 2:06 am

The swordmaster was white of hair, but his fiery spirit still burned behind his eyes. He looked on the slender youth, and his mouth twisted. "Train you? Pah! I run no orphanage for lost children here."

The boy shrugged. "All right, then."

He returned home and became a baker. His uncle had long wanted an apprentice. He married a plump girl from the next town over and raised three happy children. The swordmaster died some years later, largely unmourned. The baker slept well, untroubled by dreams of swords or destiny.

Somewhere, a kingdom languished, but that was a different story.

Nice! The trope is so firmly established that a simple and plausible departure from it is funny. He lives a pleasant, unremarkable life? Astonishing! Hilarious! Brilliant!

And the world does need bakers, after all.

Lord knows I do.

There's a 24-hour French bakery in this city. I'm not sure why these aren't standard-issue for every neighborhood in the country.

It's not a Freedom bakery anymore?

Glad we got THAT outta our system.

Hahaha, my husband's a baker. I imagine him being the protagonist here.

Tom's a Baker too.
Coincidence?
I think not.

There is no such thing as coincidence.
Either that, or everything is coincidental.
Take your pick.

Wait, wait, was this story not supposed to be tremendously sad?

My depression is preventing me from "getting" these today.

It can be sad, if you like. The main point is that everyone has a story, and it's not always about heroes and destiny.

In another way, it's also about not being a dick when you're a teacher. Unlikely pupils can be the most rewarding.

There's an entire implicit philosophy in many of scattercat's drabbles. That's the way I like 'em. He's the baker, and I like mine custard-filled.

And proper custard, too, not that Hostess-style white-sugar crapola they try to fob off as "cream-filled" sometimes.

To further summarize the moral of the story...

Especially not a white-sugar crapola filled dick.

Mister Cat (or may I call you Scatter?), would you grant me permission to record this tale?

Absolutely!

Everything I post here is also posted at Mirrorshards under a CC license that explicitly allows for derivative works. I invite recordings, paintings, sculptures, rewrites, sequels, prequels, and fanfiction of any kind; it makes me happy to see people enjoying what I make.

I should probably warn you that mrsmica has also asked to record her version, so you'll have to compete with her for awesome sound effects. The more the merrier, I say.

(P.S. - Scatter is fine, as is Cat. Just please don't shorten it, as some have done in other times and places, to Scat. I have enough problems without being named for poo. Though then it would make sense that I wrote about Beshat...)

Interesting fact: The first word of the bible is 'bereshit', meaning 'In the beginning',
producing the first theological question:
Does a bereshit in the woods?

Cute! "My kingdom for a bagel"? :)

Of course, 20 years later, the village was overrun by Huns, and all the baker's kids and grandkids were slaughtered...
The baker was imprisoned for using trans-fats. 8)

I think a male narrator might sound better, for the male character. I still want to run it on another podcast, but maybe Rish will let me run his version, along with any promos he likes, naturally. I owe Mr. Lee a promo for mirror shards so I'll get on that!

Well, "owe" is, I think, a little strong. You offered to do it as a favor. I don't think you should feel obligated to complete it; off the cuff offers can be rescinded without much issue, I think.
