The Issue With Time Travel

They finally did it. They perfected time travel. As a man stepped into the field, he felt his atoms cease to exist. Then, he felt them in two places at once, and then we was on the other side.

Just as he vanished into the air to appear 100 days previous, a scientist ran screaming into the building.

"Damn it all! We only took into account place relative to Earth! Not the place relative to the Universe!"

On the other side of the field, the man froze to death in space, with Earth on the other side of the Sun.

I wouldn't object to that, I was just worried about coming off pretentious reading my own stuff haha

Far from it. There's plenty of pretension around these parts, anyway!

Very Niven-esque.

As much as I like SF, this has always been my complaint with time travel stories. In order to fix an exit point, you have to know not only your absolute position in the universe (by finding one unmoving reference point in spacetime - good luck), but you also have to know every force that affects the position of everything, basically negating the need for any info gathering trips.

No prob. Simply build a receiver unit. You can't travel back before you installed the receiver, but it's an improvement over the space vacuum.

That would be a fine solution, assuming that you have a way to track the receiver through spacetime, some unique transtemporal carrier wave to home in on. Otherwise the receiver is just another bullseye for a blind sniper.
Hey, do you mind if I use this idea for a story?

I just trust that the TARDIS knows where she is going.
