Family Obligations - The First Month

Had it only been a month?
She had tried to escape so many times, only to lose what little freedom they had allowed. Still, she had to try again. As she worked, loosening the nails in the floor, her own nails turned red and wet.

He delivered her dinner with that mixed look of shame and pride, a small red box on the tray.
“Merry Christmas, sweetie.”
“Screw you.”
“Now, now, the family will die without our children. You understand...don’t you?”
Her hand went to her subtly undulating belly, tears wetting her cheeks.

Had it only been a month?
