We press them all the time; keyboards, microwaves, elevators. Pressing buttons is easy, yet pressing a button to end the world seems unfair. No trumpets or banners, or pitchforks or torches, just adjusting the volume on your TV set. A simple click, push, pound, flick. What if you bumped into it by mistake? Toilet flusher, or end of the world? I turn off the TV, but the blackness of the screen-

Not a bad concept, Zoe. Think about the last line a bit. One suspects it's more than the TV signal that has gone black.
There used to be things called test patterns that came on after the last scheduled TV shows of the day, before people cared about hormonal supplements and insanity diet infomercials. If they still had these patterns, it would have been cool to end your story with the test pattern. As I recall, it even resembled the symbol for nuclear radiation... a real bonus.
But then, that would have had to have been a dreamed apocalypse, since we all know that if a tree falls in the forrest and there's no one there to hear it, then there's actually no tree and no forrest.
