Winners and Losers

Post by DoctorBanzai » Tue Jul 16, 2013 10:14 pm

When they said it wasn’t a contest, did they really know what they were talking about? Thinking hard upon it, John had to wonder. He didn’t know the history of the statement, nor did he care to find out. All that mattered to him was winning. He knew he was winning, even though everyone kept telling him there were no winners or losers.

How could that be true? He’d worked so hard, pushed to the breaking point. He’d learned the tricks; used what he knew.

John was the winner, and the bodies that piled up behind him were his proof.

I read the last line figuratively and upon rereading see that you might have meant a literal pile of dead bodies. I personally prefer the tale of a man who leaves ruined lives in his pursuit of "winning" at life.

Which bent did you have in mind writing this?

Me too. If it's figurative, I've worked for this guy before. This Drabble gave me a good laugh in the same way that "Office Space" does -- funny because it's too dang true.

It's only a question of which side of the Looking Glass you're on, Alice.
