All These Worlds Are Yours

“Jameson… your orders?”

I’d heard Private White over my helmet comm the first time. I didn’t know what to say, but our entire squad had been slaughtered and as Private First Class I outranked him – slightly.

“We have one hour to get to the drop point. We don’t get back, we don’t go home.”

“And... what about the others?”

“What others? There’s nothing left.” Not even dog tags. Those damned Tendrilheads… We knew the risks when we signed up for the mission. It’s just us now.

20 miles in one E-hour… on foot… across the icy hell of Europa. Hooah.

Note: after speaking with my sister, who is in the army, I changed a few pieces of dialogue for realism.

Yes. Thinking this drabble might have that as a backstory.

When I wrote this, my mind was actually in the realm of 2010: Odyssey Two by Arthur C. Clarke.

Fistbump for correct spelling and very woeful usage of "Hooah"! :D

It looks like somebody has a knack for hundred word stories. I'm glad to read your lines they sing in a key most pleasing.

I didnt get the reference until reading the comments. Loved the word choice on this one. it read like the army. In fact, i could almost imagine snake doc from the unit reading this one. I do not know what the actor's name is but he does the allstate commercials now days.

Yes!! I got goodebumps at imagining Jonas Blane reading this!

And thanks, ZCarter, for the kind words! :)

I'd love to explore this story in a longer piece, but soldiers are SO far out of my comfort zone, I think it wouldn't end well. Haha.
