Elephants in the Walls

Post by MonsieurMoustache » Mon Sep 30, 2013 9:34 am

Not everything living in old houses has a SIN; some have rats in the vents or bats in the attic.

We’ve got elephants in the walls.

They're quite quiet; it's easy to forget they’re there. We talk of things we oughtn’t.

Until there's a sneeze beyond the damask wallpaper.

We cease discussing Fido’s infatuation with cats and where the baby disappears to at night. We imagine fanlike ears press to plaster.

I check the paper for an exterminator. Our names are in the headline.

I’m too afraid to read it.

What if elephants don’t always stay in the walls?

Love it. Feels Halloween-ish in a really unusual way. My favorite part of this story is how the elephants are the most remarkable thing to this family, when their baby disappears at night (Vera, is that you?) and their dog is into cats!

(Note to self: if ever staying at Mr. M's house, bring a tent and camp in the yard. The walls there are gettin' a little crowded there.)

In light of the NSA I was reminded to post it. This was actually the first drabble I ever wrote. Almost a year ago. Weird how fast time goes.
