Hitchhikers May Be Escaping Convicts

“Please, sir, you gotta gimme a ride!” The hitchhiker glanced over his shoulder and gripped my rearview mirror harder.

Something about him struck me as little bit... off. All twitchy and nervous. “Everything okay?” I asked.

He leaned in closer until I could smell his breath. “They’re after me,” he hissed, wiggling his eyebrows uphill.

Just over the rise was the State Penitentiary, I knew. “Sorry,” I said, shifting into gear and accelerating.

In my rearview mirror, the man sprinted after me, waving his hands as a dozen men in black-and-white pinstripes burst out of the bushes and tackled him.

nice. do they still make prisoners wear b&w? most of the ones i see now are in orange jumpsuits.

Orange is for county jails. More common at state and federal is white, with blue trim. No stripes that I know of. There was a story last year about one jail making convicts wear pink. Haven't heard how that's working out.

I seem to be behind in the latest in prison fashion! I had no idea there were so many different new getups to choose from.

I like it, Varda. And I'm with strawman--no correctional facility I'm aware of has the black and white stripes anymore. But I think it works fine in a drabble because even though it's archaic, we instinctively know what it means.

strawman, that was Sheriff Arpaio's doing, wasn't it? I am not a fan of that guy.
