Life and Limb.

Post by will write for beer » Wed Jan 22, 2014 10:33 pm

It's been two days since the bear took my hand.

I rolled over and played dead like you're supposed to. Can’t believe it worked, what with all the blood and everything, but it did. The bear ambled off, and I got to work. Used my belt for a tourniquet, then cauterized the wound in the embers of the camp fire.

I look at the space where my hand is supposed to be. I can feel the bear's stomach acid dissolving my fingers. I imagine making a bony fist, and I yank. Hard.

Phantom limb syndrome works both ways, you know.

There are other things than limbs and digits that can be phantom.

thanks everyone. the idea came to me because of a medical problem i'm having with a finger on my left hand. long story short, thought it was arthritis (which i've had for years), but it turns out i have a deep bone infection from a small cut. if the meds don't clear it up, i'll have to have surgery so they can manually scrape the infection out. yay. anyway, the finger hurt so bad i was contemplating amputation, which made think of phantom limb, blahblahblah...

Let me add my voice to the chorus praising this piece. I think it unfolds beautifully, so that you put it all together right before the last line, and then the stinger adds a nice, finished feel to the whole thing.

I'm sorry to hear about your finger, though. Bone infection is no fun at all to say the least. I hope the meds do the trick and get you back to two-handed drabbling in no time at all, friend.

Nah, you got it right the first go. Easy to overwork drabbles.
