Startled, I look up from my newspaper. It isn’t customary for travelers to talk to one another as they wait for the shuttle to arrive.
“Excuse me?”
“Your mother. She’s right.”
An image of my once imposing mother, now small and weak, and lying in a hospital bed crosses my mind. No, she’s dead, I remind myself. The salt in such a fresh wound gives rise to grief and then anger.
“Who are you? You knew my mother?”
“Name’s Gregor– she’s been yelling since I sat down. It’s your tie. It looks ridiculous with that shirt.
