The Cruel Numismatist

He stood in the heart of the bowery at the corner of Loup and Garou, idly rolling the coins in his gloved hand and enjoying the melody as they jingled against one another.

Regarding with disdain the indigent homeless around him, he flung his arm forward fingers splayed, sending shiny quarters raining down in the street in a cacophony of pretty chimes.

Not the sandwiched alloys they mint today, each quarter minted before 1965 gave off that special sound only silver makes.

Hands burning and yelping in pain, the unfortunate hobos reflexively transformed to were-form and fled into the darkness.

They say one should eschew obfuscation (look it up) but my own personal style for drabbles is to turn that around and obfuscate as much as possible until the last minute when the reveal should come at you like a dark-matter brick from left field.

My favorite drabbles on DC embody that structure I admire so much. I guess that's why I'm attempting to emulate it.

My first official rejection of a submitted work. Now I really feel like an aspiring writer.

Gonna frame it and put it on the wall next to the spot I have saved for my first Hugo award. :D

Just the sort of inspiration I need to strive for more strange.

Not gonna get rid of me that easy, Normy... :)

I feel all warm and fuzzy now since I found out I got a graphic and a synopsis on the home page of www.welltoldtales.com for this drabble.

I'm thinking sub-prime lenders.
