“Morning, Lucy,” her nurse said, “How are you feeling?”
“I'm glad to be out of the ICU,” Lucy said flatly, tiredly. “It's full of sick people.”
She meant it. She didn't like being around sick people.
“Your fever is still high,” noted the nurse.
“I'm so tired—I . . .” she trailed off.
Lucy stared at the window, catatonic.
“I'll tell the doctor you're still febrile,” the nurse thought out loud. “I guess you brought back more from Panama than you expected, eh?” she offhanded, leaving with her chart.
Lucy lifted her head.
“I haven't told anyone about my trip,” she rasped.
