Strange Beasts
The animals have been acting strangely.
They no longer go on all fours.
They stagger on two, falling over and over again. They always get back up.
They've been stealing clothing, but wear it on the wrong places.
They try to speak. But without lips and tongues the words are mangled, alien.
We waited for the animals to turn back.
They never did.
In time surgery changed their legs, gave them hands to shake. Specialty tailoring provided them with fashionable wear. We grew used to their voices.
No-one thinks the animals so strange anymore. Even as their fur falls out.

Re: Strange Beasts
I'm not sure what this reminds me of more. The Pigs in Animal Farm, or The Beast Men in The Island Of Dr Moreau.
The truth may be out there, but lies are inside your head.

Re: Strange Beasts
I definitely get more Animal Farm from it. I have a suspicion that the major fast food concerns are going to be lobbying like mad for a removal of laws against cannibalism (Soylent Green is... something tasty!).

Re: Strange Beasts
I did think of the Pigs in AF after I saw the finished work, but it actually came from a larger piece where animals start behaving like fairy tale animals and try to integrate into society. I think it's stronger here, though. Assimilation is scary.

Re: Strange Beasts
A very well-done one. I enjoyed this story. Plenty of room for interpretations.
