Work of an unknown artist [Category: Halloween]

Post by pondspider » Sat Oct 04, 2014 5:13 pm

This is a reworking of The Gardener's Tale with, I hope, a better ending. Here goes...
Mike had recently retired and now spent many an afternoon at the allotment, tending his crop of pumpkins. He’d taken it on when Old Jim had died unexpectedly a year earlier.

The other gardeners wouldn’t discuss Jim’s demise. They seemed to avoid the decrepit shed.

One morning Mike found his pumpkins transformed into Jack-o’-lanterns of hellish appearance.

The old shed had been toppled over, as if at the whim of a monstrous petulant child. Where it had stood, a huge wooden trapdoor was set into the earth, iron-studded and with enormous hinges, the ring-handle smeared with fresh pumpkin flesh.

Oh goodness. I'm scared for Mike.
