Gardening

Working together we dig the new flowerbed in the pouring rain. Each drop stings as it hits my numb hands, the coldness seeping into my core.

My best friend describes her vision, a rainbow of colour designed to cover eleven months. She turns each clod with gusto, her enthusiasm contagious. A line of new plants waits to be positioned in the fresh flowerbed, many of them specifically bee friendly.

I promised to help again today, so here I am.

I plant a young Rosemary above where I believe her heart is positioned. She paid the price for tempting my husband.

Remind me to be on my very best behaviour if I'm ever in your neck of the woods. :)

I loved the twist at the end. ;)

I don't know as that would matter; it looks like the perception of the behaviour is what counts.

Also loved it.

Thank you for the lovely comments and sorry for the delay in replying - I spend a lot of time running around after my two lively children :-)

You know what they say, Lucy Jayne. "Silence is golden...and Duct Tape is silver!"

I love how this story seemed perfectly sweet and normal up until the last second. I am a little confused however as weather it's narrator's best friend who'd previously helped her in the garden that has now become mulch . . . or was this a different unnamed person and the friend is just helping out (as good friends should).
