Chasing the Wind

Knife and fork caused a black liquorice lava cake to erupt. His second martini was satiating. He would have a hot bath and dream of the falling snow outside. The stars had become unbelievably bright, and the milky way was more than words. He had time now; drawing, painting, singing, reading.
But he had been alone for so, so long. And he never unraveled why. He had been left, last man on earth.
The only thing of certainty was that tonight would be the last night he would cry himself to sleep.
He had everything—everything but what he needed.

author's note:
a fate worse than death? I always wondered how Dave managed to make it to old age in the last scenes of 2001. being well fed, comfortable, alone. what if you woke up and had the whole world to yourself?
Many on the forum have asked me, so here's my answer: a spoonful of lighter fluid. And you'll need to wash it out really well when you're done.
