A double barrel shotgun was slung over Chance's arm, while Bob wore floppy ears and ran on all fours. The boys were mushroom hunting again.
“Herp, herp!” barked Bob excitedly as they trod through the forested hills.
. . .
“Ho there!” called out a voice from above.
Chance looked up, surprised. “Derp?”
“Say, I seem to be having some difficulty getting down. Could you, uh?”
A parachutist dangled high above, tangled in the piny boughs.
“Derp!” they assured and scrambled up to help. Suddenly, a gaping hollow of splintered teeth shot out and swallowed Chance and Bob alive.

I quite liked this. Clever idea for a monster.

I wonder though, why was the boy wearing floppy ears? Was he a real dog, or a boy pretending to be a dog?

thank you, I'm glad you liked it. I must say though, that if he had been an actual dog I would have described him as such. If you read the other Chance and Bob stories you'll see that they often pretend to be things. I think the idea of pretending to be something so hard that you don't break character even if you're being devoured or threatened by an alien, etc., to be very funny
