Perchance to Dream: A Nightmare War Drabble

Post by ROU Killing Time » Mon Aug 10, 2009 3:58 pm

They had come mostly at night, but also during the day.

Wherever people slept the enemy forged a new beachhead in the Nightmare War.

Many were lost in the early years, but great heroes arose to defend mankind against their nemesis.

The Dream Guardians patroled through the night, sheltering the slumbering masses and beating the dark foes back into the shadows.

Harion Halladar had fought well this night.

Many were saved that would otherwise have been lost.

Weary, he wondered how long he could survive the terrors, but morning was coming and soon he would awaken.

Then he could rest.

I like. Interesting concept, nice hook.

Would I as an insomniac be considered a deserter? Well, I do sleep a little, so then I guess a dream hippie.

Deserter? No.
Malingering slacker? Yes.

Like it.

When I was a little strawchild, my dreams were so vivid and movie-like, I remember one where credits rolled at the end.
I sometimes wonder if comatose people might simply be taking that to an extreme:

"Go Away! Has it never occurred to you that I am NEEDED in this world?! You see, the red cow is here, and of all the people here, I am the only one who knows the Drabblecast prophesy. The lives of millions depend on me staying here. So if you want to be with me, get your coma on, and come help me save the universe."

Ya, it's way more interesting than the day job.

Same thing happened to me. Great minds think alike, an apparently so do yours and mine.

Just wait til Comcast figures out how to bill you for Pay-per-view.

Hmm, I like it. The hero has a ridiculous name and the undescribed terrors are reminiscent of childhood (you made Strawman come over all poignant).

Thank you, I was hoping to evoke that childhood terror feeling and imagery.

As for the justfiably described silly name, that was meant to allude to the concept that these heroes of the nightmare war were ones who had gotten deeply in touch with their inner super-hero or favorite fantasy role-playing persona, come alive in a planet-wide consensual lucid dream-state.

I've actually got this drabble filed under "expand to short-story."

This is a lot like a role-playing game setting I and a friend thought up.
