The hair on my arm looked like copper wire as the static from the compression chamber hissed the arrival of another inspector. I peered back at the massive pairs of eyes and the subtle eager scissoring of its pincers. It looked over me with no emotion before moving to the next specimen.

My body was immobile, but I could hear their voices inside my mind calling me “Copperhead.”

It was to be the final sale. Because at the end of universally counted days in the inter-galactic trade markets, it was the red-headed humans that fetched the highest price for water.
