Bsides 10- Growing Humans by Neil Buchanan
Tuesday, June 1, 2010

To start, my pet has no roots and only two limbs. Her bark is soft and spongy. A domed leafless flower grows from her trunk. She’s small; standing a mere four branches high and makes odd gibbering sounds when I draw close...

Recorded live at Balticon, Science Fiction convention May 28, 2010

Special thanks to guest voices Jonathan McNeill and Heather Welliver

Oh heck yea, that was fun! Where have you been hiding this little gem of a story?

This story could serve as a metaphor about bringing democracy to Iraq.
Loved the audio sample files.

Norm, was that an unedited live read? Perfect in one pass? Dang.

That was AWESOME. I'm with Moonowl - if that was an unedited sight-read, then everyone involved is some kind of super genius. The only error I heard was that the music over-powered the vocals during the intro. The the story itself was horribly wonderful. :D

Indeed it could have. Hadn't thought of that.

Yep, everyone nailed it first time. John and Heather killed the reading like it was nothing. Only edit I made was chopping out a few seconds of blank space and false start to the outro music after the story was over. Easiest/quickest to produce DC episode ever!

It takes a special kind of story to make me want to retch and ROFL at the same moment.
Even besides that (which was awesome), I have a soft spot in my heart for stories that have aliens who are really really alien which we can't establish meaningful communications with, in this extreme case unknowingly molesting and dismembering , leaving her to bleed to death. Wow, dark!
