Bsides 36 – Warm Regression

Postby Algernon Sydney is Dead » Tue Dec 24, 2013 9:49 pm

Feature: Warm Regression by Norm Sherman
Genres: Strange

Tuesday, December 24th, 2013
There were always bright rings on the doorbell and smiling faces carrying covered dishes. There was always a peck on the cheek for us kids when grandma came, and always a strong handshake from grandpa. His big warm hands always convinced us that he was as strong as he was wise. All of them would pile in, cherry red cheeks and warm mittens. They would brush off all the snow from outside and remind us how cold it was where we lived. It was true, we lived in one of the coldest parts of the country, and there was always a blizzard on Christmas Eve.

Hah! Awesome!

I loved that you didn't go to zombies.

This was a mood piece and nicely sold by the score. The practice described was a cruel throwback to the bad-old-days and a sure way to get on my sh*t list, if I see someone doing it to a pet. (Working animals are a bit of a different case, depending.)

But, for this story I don't mind at all, because the severity was applied to clowns. It's okay to abuse those bastards!

Hey, that was great! How long has it been since we heard a Norm original? We've come a long way since "The Coughing Dog"!

I'm agreed that "mood piece" describes this one well. I was so drawn in, I was expecting something darker outside, and laughed out loud when the punchline hit.

Laughed? What could have been darker
Spoiler:
than a clown

This story is going on my all time favorites list. Truly weird Norm.

I am prepared to testify that Norm has never had any room in his warm heart for clowns.
Oh, sure, he will pimp them out for some of his best stories.
But ever since the "unfortunate incident" on his first birthday, Norm has suffered from Coulrophobia.
This story, Clown Eggs, The Last Great Clown Hunt. Therapy.

I am boycotting the DC awards this year because I can't vote B36.
I'd like to see it nominated for a Hugo, (but am not a member of the requisite Worldcons.)

Hey, we asking him to include his stories, but NOOO, he didn't want any more adulations.

I think it's more because he doesn't want that trophy in his house, overlong.
"I swear I saw it move, man!"

Note that Norm's other requirement was that the recipient be alive or only recently dead. If that doesn't smack of human sacrifice, I don't know what does!

PS: lots of people seem to boycott these awards, and not just this year, but 2 or 3 (¿sock puppets, light?) come out of the woodwork just to nominate and vote.
