Bsides 45 – Buried Talents

Postby Algernon Sydney is Dead » Mon May 05, 2014 12:59 am

Feature: Buried Talents by Richard Matheson
Genres: Horror

Image

Sunday, May 4th, 2014
A man in a wrinkled, black suit entered the fairgrounds. He was tall and lean, his skin the color of drying leather. He wore a faded sport shirt underneath his suit coat, white with yellow stripes. His hair was black and greasy, parted in the middle and brushed back flat on each side. His eyes were pale blue. There was no expression on his face. It was a hundred and two degrees in the sun but he was not perspiring.

Not sure I got this one. What happened at the end?

It's a little vague and it took a minute to hit me too the first time I read it, but
Spoiler:
the key sentence at the end is "He took the steak knives." Remember, the tall man in black rejected all the prizes up to that point, so it stands out a little. Then the last line, after the fat man doubles over in pain clutching his side is "He felt as though he was bleeding inside." Dude done got supernaturally stabbed by the mysterious man in black.
"Give us all some Jelly"

Yea, I was wondering about that.
Now that leaves me with the motivation... :-)
I definitely has a twilight zone vibe to it!

Classic story; well told and voiced well.

But the important thing...That's totally Bo's face used in the cover art, right?

Also, what are the hidden talents (plural)?
We see two overt talents: Moisture (sweat) conservation, and ping-pong ninjutsu.

But we only learn of one buried talent: karmically sticking it to the carny after the carny was sticking it to the rubes.

Where are the other buried talents? Or was the title some "meta" bait-and-switch to go along with the story's subject matter? :P

Interestingly enough, it is Donald Trump. He came up in my photo search for 'Carnival Barker.'

 That's almost as good. (I love The Donald's policy ideas, but he is a clown.)

But, you didn't include his wig! I'm pretty sure that's a federal crime.
