I think this story was one long riff on "She really 'dumped' him".
And, since this trash did not seem to attract the usual swarms of flies, ants, rats, and seagulls or crows; it obviously wasn't real (other hints of unnaturalness are in the story too). The only possible
explanation is that it was an allegory for Purgatory.
Interesting story and strangely satisfying.
