Favorite Drabblecast Episode for Parsec

Postby normsherman » Sun Jul 13, 2008 11:56 pm

So, I'm not 100% sure about these Parsec guidelines but we were nominated and now, if I'm understanding this correctly, have to send in a sample.

So we get three 10 minute excerpts. What were your 3 favorite stories that aired between May 9 (Drabblecast 12- Free Willy 2.4) and April 30 (Drabblecast 62- Sizzle) in terms of story, production and just all around excellence?

Or if you have a favorite 10 minute stretch of a story, mention that.

Gotta have this done this week so the sooner your reply the better!

Hmm... I'll have a better think this week, but I think the high point of DC over that period in which story, narration and production met in a non-Kurzweilian singularity of perfection was a ten minute stretch somewhere in the middle of Jelly Park.

Time to have a listen through the archives. I've only got a backlog of 47 hours as it is ;-)

I thought it made more sense to make this another category under Preliminary Voting rather than Podcasts and suchforth.

This is very tough. I hate that the cut-off is episode 62, because that eliminates some outstanding stories (Malish, The Storyteller, Wiggly People, and Time Shift are in my top 20.) And I can't reduce them to three. But here are my rankings for the other 16 of my top 20:

1. 43 Jelly Park
2. 24 Black & White Animals Trilogy
3. 55 Circes
4. 53 Sing
5. 18 The One that Got Away
6. 38 Wiggins General Store
7. 36 Pumkinseeds
8. 54 Unholy Fruit
9. 35 The Guilt Trader
10. 20 A Day with Daddy
11. 25 The Worm Within
12. 17 Morton
13. 27 Crazy
14. 62 Sizzle
15. 40 Marbles
16. 57 Tiger Fortune Princess

Well, if I were to pick what stories I thought best represented DC,

1. The worm within
2. Eggs
3. Office Consultation
4. Trifecta

The Dribblecast, we don't care if you sound like an idiot.

Thanks for bumping Norm, I had this on my to-do list.

Real Drabblelcasty stories are:
020 - A Day with Daddy
029 - Code Brown
031 - Office Consultation
036 - Pumpkinseeds !!
039 - The Beekeepers
043 - Jelly Park !!
058 - Eggs
059 - The Interview

Darn, it's hard to name just 3! That's the thing with a genre called 'weird': anything goes, so it's very very hard to name three episodes that represent that weirdness so well... It's a feeling. It's a way of life. I can not put that in three episodes.
I'll be there in 5 minutes. If not, read this again.

To pick 3 for quality of reading, story, originality, and production I'd choose:

Beekeepers, Morton, Jelly Park.

I'd say I have a soft (icky) spot for Worm Within, as it was the Drabblecast's first hello to me, a curiosity following escapepod listener. I imagine I'm not alone in this sentiment. Not the best episode overall, put emblematic and memorable nonetheless.

I hate to risk seeming to diss our authors, but I just gave a relisten to Pumpkinseeds, and I think I might have to rank Norm's intro to the halloween episode among the top 3 10 minute segments, right along with the Duck Safety protocol at the Embassy Suites.

I like Ira Glass, but he's not as good as Norm Sherman. And how about the Bbardles? Are they eligible?
