The Drabblecast Primer (our 10 best episodes)

http://www.drabblecast.org/new/

So I drafted up the above page, 'New to the Drabblecast?' to help orient brand new listeners. A link will be placed prominently in the header of Drabblecast.org. One of the stated goals for our new site is to expand our audience, which means that encountering and properly transitioning the clueless is essential. Not just existing genre fiction podcast enthusiasts (AKA 'I heard Norm on escapepod' guy*, but hapless Googlers, looking for say 'zombie story,' who come upon one of our site, perhaps never having heard a podcast in their life. This would be step 1 in their transition.

The Primer, detailed in the right column is what I would like you fine folks of the Drabblecast forums to focus on. This downloadable set of 10 episodes is a 'best of' - a wide ranging list that, once absorbed, should give a sense for the way we do things 'round here. What exists now is a list that I sketched together rather quickly.

Would you offer a different set of 'sodes? If so, what are your 10, and why the substitution? This list is going to have a certain authoritative air, so I'd rather there be as many voices involved in the process as possible.

* This classification includes yours truly, so it's mentioned not as a put down, nor to describe a type of fan we will cease to cater to, but to identify our norm.

Tom explored this with various 10 best lists on gardenstreet. I think that multi-critic lists are a good idea. (and not just because i have a top 10 there. ) With such a wide range of DC stories I think any single set of 10 gives a possibly skewed perspective.)

The big picture idea, the goal with this is to make it simpler/easier to integrate new listeners - to present something immediate for an outsider to chew on. As democratic as it would be to include multiple lists (I liked what Tom did), it defeats the purpose of a primer. This is the first step from which a listener will "explore," not the exploration itself. Ya' feel me?

I use the term 'best of' as a means of framing this discussion, not to insinuate what goes in to the primer set is 'definitive.' It won't be labeled as a best of, nor will it be implied to be a best of. It's an introduction. Strong episodes, spanning our history, with multiple genres and divergent tone. A way of hooking newbies otherwise perplexed by our prolific episode count.

If it helps then, don't think if it as a ten episode 'best of,' think of it as the ten episodes you'd send to a person, if they asked you blankly 'so what's good?'

I'll go over my own personal 10 best then, update it for new content and post my thoughts here. If enough people do the same, you can run your mathematical wizardry upon it and come up with a primer list. :-)

Anyone who leaves off Babel Probe needs to relisten to possibly the all time best episode. And although not an episode, Black and White Animals Trilogy and In Search of the Mongolian Death Worm really do highlight what is uniquely Drabblecastian.

So I think what makes the most sense is to sum the total mentions of episodes within this topic, treat that like votes, take top 10 from there. I'll list that out end of today.

My existing list (Bo Kaier), as it appears on the site:

123 - Toast
49 - Heart to Heart
146 - Teddy Bears and Tea Parties
124 - Ghosts and Simulations
115 - Clown Eggs
153 - What Fluffy Knew
150 - Morris and the Machine
92 - Synesthesia
200 - The Last Question
b11 - Nyarlathotep

{5} 109-Babel Probe
{5} 115-Clown Eggs
{5} 123-Toast
{4} 43-Jelly Park
{4} 129-Annabelle's Alphabet
{4} 170,171-Mongoose
{3} 113-Charlie the Purple Giraffe was Acting Strange
{3} 146-Teddy Bears and Tea Parties
{3} 148-The Last Great Clown Hunt
{3} 150-Morris and the Machine
{3} 206-Creature

That is the consensus list right now. I'm inclined to shave off Clown Hunt, so we're not doubling down on clowns. Does that list work for everyone? Tough choices to be sure.

That's a good list. Babe Probe is on twice.
