DC Merch?

Postby pondspider » Fri Oct 17, 2014 5:02 pm

I'd love to be able to show my DC love by wearing a tee-shirt emblazoned with something suitably strange. It would be a great conversation starter and might draw in some more strange listeners :)

Any plans for such things?

If not, I suppose I can always get a custom tee printed with something from the DC site.... maybe one of the episode art pieces. But I'd prefer to see the cash go to DC via an official suppler :)

This T is weird, but the weirdest part is the only size still available is small. Remind Norm of his promise to restock.

Saw this. :) Sadly, it's many years since I fitted into a small size T

How about a call for Drabblecast subscribers to submit ideas for the new design(s) of T-shirt?

And why stop at T-shirts? Coffee mugs. Lapel badges. Bumper stickers. Bobble / beany hats.

Ve vill konquer zee velt!!!

Because before you can sell it, you have to have it to sell. Merchandising costs money, and it doesn't always make economic sense. Although restocking the human sized T-shirts certainly looks like a good idea.

Remember though, we have to leave enough room in Norm's shed for his bicycle.

Why not have a contest, with Norm choosing the winner(s), then do a Kickstarter to have the merch produced?

I wonder how much a 3D Printer version of this would go for?:

I was thinking the same thing :)

Only produce the goods if there is enough demand to cover costs (and then some :) )

It would also raise awareness of DC and bring in new listeners.

And that 3D squid tentacle is awesome... if we had a 3D printed version, how big? Could it be adapted for some practical use, e.g. as a letter/mail holder (between the curls of the thing). How about a rubbery version? Pendant or brooch (suckers replaced by cheap sparkly things, maybe). Ideas, ideas...

Edit:
...earrings, baby teether (imagine the looks of other adults), stress-thing, floatation toy...

Guys, this is good. There are plans in the works for something similar. What I would like from you all, is a list of merch that you think would really sell. I'll make up a poll after we get some more good suggestions going, and lets get the top items out of this.

Oh, I'm terrible at brainstorming. But perhaps I might suggest Drabblecast door knockers? Or even a Drabblecast bluetooth mouse. Now THAT would be cool!

Not sure about the mouse, but how about a tenticle that clips onto a Bluetooth earpiece?

I know Tom has asked for practical suggestions, so I shall try to resist the nonsensical ;)

...on the other hand, the silly ideas may trigger workable ones, so I reckon I may just keep 'em coming for a while.

In parallel, I'll attempt to do some viable ones :)

Inspiration may be found by visiting custom product websites.

I recently bought a rather smart cotton apron ("Clean All The Things!") in support of the Hyperbole And A Half blog. It was supplied by Zazzle.com. Shipping to the UK (5-10 days) was around 9 bucks.

Zazzle's web site has loads of ideas for custom products. Well worth a look. As I understand it, Zazzle make on-demand, so there's no up front investment.

Another good source of inspiration might be Cafe Press. As well as the .com site (U.S. and Worldwide), they have several others (Canada, Australia, NZ, Germany, France, Spain, Ireland, UK), so shipping costs may be reduced for buyers in those countries.

I spent some time on Zazzle.com today. Here are some merch examples:

And, for the weirdo who has everything... Image

I haven't looked into the money-earning side of this, but I believe it's on a commission basis.

I must stress, these are virtual merch. Nothing is being manufactured. All I did was upload some DC graphics (tweaked in GIMP) and added them to customisable products. No money has changed hands ;)

Personally, I'd buy the T-shirt and the commute/travel mug. :)

Great idea for schwag. I'd rather do a crowd fund for forum originated ideas, but if there's a problem with that, this stuff would be good for dspreading the word, and walking the weird walk, not just talking the weird talk, right?

I've looked into these sites. The thing that always surprises me, is how little makes it to Norm. Zazzle expects around 7% of the price to make it to Norm. They charge $14.95 for a base white T shirt, no printing. I can get a custom printed t-shirt around here for $10. So they really gouge you for the convience of not stocking anything.

Had a look at Zazzle's info on royalties. It's up to the seller to set the percentage, and Zazzle adjust the item price accordingly. It can be anything from 5% up, but they recommend no more than 10% for most sellers. 7% is typical.

It does seem like a bad deal for Norm, except it's better than people going out and having T-shirts (or whatever) made in a local shop, with nothing going to Norm... Perhaps we could ask anyone who does that to make a one-off donation to DC?
