Lunch at the Innsmouth Inn

Sam pointed at the sushi menu.

His waitress stared with unblinking, watery eyes. "Shoggoth." she said. "Is very good."

:D I like it.

But, it's way too long to be a twabble and it's also over Twitter's 140 char limit.

How embarrassing! Thought I got a pass on punctuation. Good news: I loves me some editing!

Here it is pared down and vetted by http://twitfic.net/sizingtool/twabble_sizing_fun.htm

Huh? Is this a reference to something?
Or just a general, "Who moved my cheese" type parable?

More of an attempt to fit a new genre of story (for me it's new) that I want to try my hand at into 100 characters. I suppose it might be read as a parable, but it wasn't really what I was going for. So, back to the drawing board.

It has the flavor of the Zen icing that scattercat has served up in the drabble thread. Good stuff, that. But US Air may produce immunity.

Not bad.

But, if it's recursive, don't runaway recursive routines usually chew through the stack and crash on their own? :)

Your handle plus the spelling of "realised" makes me wonder: Are you British or Commonwealth? (Dang Limeys can't spell English words the proper American way. :D ) Just curious, is all.

Finally, and I wouldn't normally pick this nit with a newbie, but a Linux charcount methodology has been known to be off, before. The twabble is only 99 chars.

I prefer British spelling myself (and punctuation for that matter), but re-acclimated myself to American so I wouldn't have to keep track of which I was supposed to be using when writing stories for submission. I may be American, but in the written word, I prefer the Queen's English.

Not having tried the linux one, I'm going to guess it's counting the End Of Line character. Does it seem to be off one character per line generally? If so, someone could make a simple python script to strip out all the white space characters. Though, at that point, we may as well just have a script to do the character count altogether.

I usually write mine in Notepad++ when I'm in Windows and its count always matches your tool (word count is a different story  ). I'm sure there's some Linux utility that will count the character correctly so a custom script may be a bit excessive.

I can't find the posts where we discussed this, but, yes, if the flags are wrong, line termination gets counted. Pasting in from windows to a linux shell can also add \r\n, as opposed to Linux's \n.

Plus, the shell commands do not handle things like non-breaking spaces correctly, IIRC. Microsoft's "smart" characters also cause problems.

Anywho, I ain't going to over-analyze or over-document the Linux/Unix issues since we already have a vastly easier and more accurate tool.

Yes, I am a yank. I inadvertently accepted the spell-check replacement for 'realized' when I submitted to the forum.

I did recalculate the character count and realize I've come up short by 1 character. My character count algorithm incorrectly counted an embedded newline I had in my file. I've since revised my character count script (http://drabblecast.freeforums.org/char- ... tml#p14742" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false) to take this into consideration.
