Like that Vanilla ice cream? Is it nice and creamy?

Beaver butts emit goo used in vanilla flavored foods

Pull quotes:

"I’m like, 'Get down there, and stick your nose near its bum.'"

"People think I'm nuts," she added. "I tell them, 'Oh, but it's beavers; it smells really good.'"

:D :D

"You can squirt [castoreum] out. It's pretty gross."

Only 292-pounds per year is collected because the milking method is unpleasant for all parties involved.

FDA-approved castoreum is not required to be listed as an ingredient on food items. Manufacturers may list "natural flavoring" instead.

FDA approved! Although apparently industry consumption is only at like 300 lb's a year, whereas synthetics like vanillan are over 2.6 million pounds. Apparently it's easier to just have scientists make sweetener in a lab rather than convince them to squeeze it from a beaver's ass.

Still, it's only listed on product ingredients as "natural flavoring", so basically you never know if you are putting beaver gland bi-product into your mouth every time you eat dessert.

Sure you do! This is covered by the same law of statistics familiar to planners, generals, and gamblers -- similar to the 50-50-90 rule.

The odds of that vanilla taste (and not just in desserts) being beaver butt scrapings is directly proportional to how much it would squick you. These odds also approach one for all knowledgeable or worried parties. This is just good, hard, anecdotal science. :)

Also, it's not clear that the goo is used instead of vanilla, it seems to be in conjunction with it. I'm looking at an ice cream container, just now, that lists both "vanilla extract" and "natural flavors". (I shall not state whether I have a craving for "beaver" again.)

By "reproduced in a lab" I feel certain they mean they have genetically modified the scientists, and can now scrape it from their butts.
