Yeah, I saw that on Drudge...

It's kind of sad that I'm so jaded that even this only shocked me a little. I'm so used to lurid headlines that even a story like this–that is wrong in just about every possible–only makes me raise my eyebrows, not gasp or weep or some more appropriate reaction.

I'm vaguely curious about why the mother "really" did this (if there is, indeed, a "really" to be known), but an equally large part of me would rather not know.

Ghastly. Reminds of a smaller scale Dahmer. But perhaps even more disturbing. I know there are many species who eat their own young, but with people it seems so utterly unnatural. Familial cannibalism might just be the worst social moray I could conceive of.

I agree. And yet, when I study the specifics of some stem cell research, the ethics look eerily similar. If you had Parkinson's, and there was a cure that required fetal cells bearing your DNA to be injected into your brain, would you conceive in order to harvest the necessary embrionic material?

But we are told that such questions are above our pay grade, that such thoughts interfere with science. Why can't the mother in this story get away with saying that?

Interesting point about the stem cells. That would have been a more plausible answer than "Satan made me do it."

I'm surprised that I'm NOT desensitized enough to be totally mortified by this. She didn't just eat her baby's brain-- she tore his face off and ate it. She ate his toes. She stabbed herself in the chest with a frikkin sword. I mean, cmon. Holy crap.

^^^ Like I said, it raised my eyebrows.

Strawman with a slam dunk. On reflection, I think that's actually why I'm so jaded and hard to shock. Stuff (that I consider to be) just as bad as this goes down 1000 times a day, legally, just in America. Our taxes even fund it. This baby was horribly butchered? Add it to the list. This sort of violence is so ubiquitous in our society a headline like this just doesn't even register.

Definitely a case where I'ld be tempted to consider an argument for forced sterilization, or a "guilty by reason of insanity" sentence.

I had a really "good" psych rotation in nursing school, and for years afterward, I could not stand to hear people refer to someone as "crazy," meaning "lots of fun." Someone would say, "She's crazy! Heeheehee" and I'd be like, "No, she's not. Don't say that. It's not funny. There is nothing funny about being crazy."

In retrospect, I was kind of annoying. But schizophrenia - not cool in any way.
