So in the Mega-Beast prelim voting, now in the wild for close to a week, the 12 spots seem to be coming in to focus. Nothing is set until voting closes Sunday, I can certainly see some critters powered in to the final bracket over the weekend, but the likely list reads like this:
( 01 ) Raptor
( 02 ) Tanuki
( 03 ) Yeti
( 04 ) Squid
( 05 ) Armadillo
( 06 ) Rhino
( 07 ) Manatee
( 08 ) Hornet
( 09 ) Wolverine
( 10 ) Owl
( 11 ) Panda
( 12 ) Shark
Baboon, Sloth, Jellfish are hanging out just on the cusp.

So assuming the final 12 stays set, I want to put it to the group for help with "punny" / clever names that now seem tradition after the likes of Crablooey and Telephant.
Here's my rough draft list, admittedly some are weak to just laughable (or from my old concepts at http://www.bokaier.com/mega-beasts/concepts/index.html
, drop em' now. Gonna be finishing art on the first 4 by Sunday, so something needs to stick.
raptor (savagery focused), cyclop
torapter (assuming single laser eye)
uki (metal/robot powers)
(bludgeoning powers), Cold
Foot (freeze/ice power)
(stabbing, blades based), Drakken (flame thrower - dragon mixed with krakken)
adillo (general brute), Armor
dillo (heavy emphasis on tank like nature)
no (sand, desert powers), Fry
no (fire powers)
tee (mind control powers), (also see earlier forum exchange on psychic manatee)
net (stabbing/cutting based)
verine (zombie/undead power)

Sharkatraz: focused on overpowering and trapping its enemies. A Mouth filled with spikes like an iron maiden and an open air stomach tank surrounded by a bone cage. The tank is inhabited by parasitic leech-like critters as inmates that sap strength from the Sharkatraz's prey. Also shakle-like hands.

How bout 'Panda Claws',
flies in pimpmobile pulled by tiny reindeer,
calls everyone a ho.

Tenuki. 9 fakes, 1 real.
Tenuki is also a japanese term in Go for ignoring your opponent's weak move, and playing somewhere else.

I'd say that we use the crazy Japanese hornets from the video. Flesh melting acid as well as the other stuff (stinging, flight etc). From there we make it giant, give it a hornet hive in it's abdomen and call it a Hivenet.

Voting for the preliminary round ends in one hour (midnight eastern time). If anyone sees this, hit the voting page quickly, and you can play god and decide the final roster spot, breaking the gridlock between sloth, shark, and owl. One will be handed a rose, and eliminated from the Mega-Beasthood forever.
Details on round one forthcoming.

I'm shocked that no one suggested something along the lines of Ta-nuke, a raccoon with atomic powers.

Or Tri-Nuki (the Norm Sherman version), an entire massive testicle greater than the competition.

To quote a famous podcaster, "Check this out".
Ideas for next year?

Reading materials! We hit these 10 like a check list, though more generically with Bison over 'Cape Buffalo' and Frog over 'Poison Dart Frog' etc. Didn't want to divide the voter base or get in to which species of a critter is best - 52 choices already seemed too complex. Missed mosquito - our collective bad their. One for 09?
I'm updating the Mega-Beast site with some links, I'll be sure to get this on there (with credit), bolddeciever's Cheetah'sploitation link, and in addition a host of youtube animal fight links (which is apparently a thriving sub culture on said video site). With informed readers comes informed voting!
