MB4 R3 - UDC vs. War Mer'chine vs. Mongoose vs. F Narwhal

As the seasons change so to change the rounds of the death match. Here venerable beasts from Drabblecast episodes past seize the spotlight, and another shot at glory. Like Dancing with the Stars, but so much less desperate.

Because picking just 3 competitors for the third round was ever so difficult, we're starting out with an expanded format. Rank the 8 beasts presented on mega-beasts.com, up to Tuesday October 19th (Midnight, Eastern), at which point only the strongest trio will remain. Bo will fancy them up, and what will formally represent round 3 will begin. That will last the traditional 2 weeks, and then, as it has been since time immemorial, the winner will become a finalist, and a gut-wrenching Meta-Beast monstrosity!

Competitors (by episode seniority):
Morton - # 17: Morton by Adam Carvin
Unspeakable Duck Creature - # 66: Creatures in Disguise by James Shackell
Friendly Narwhal - # 71: Perfect Down Further by Max Kraft
Snuffles - # 81: Snuffles by Jamie Lackey
Uncle Smarmy - # 115: Clown Eggs by Jay Lake
Tark - # 139: Let Us Now Praise Awesome Dinosaurs by Leonard Richardson
War Machine of the Merfolk - # 141: On the Destruction of Copenhagen by the War Machines of the Merfolk by Peter M. Ball
Mongoose - # 170 and 171: Mongoose part 1 and 2 by Sarah Monette and Elizabeth Bear

Hey all - slight work in progress situation here with the competitors info. Things were written up from memory, IE size and powers, so yeh, if something seems dramatically off, you've heard the classic episode more recently, fact-check me, I will update the info to reflect, no qualms. Other than that, enjoy. Make your rankings, and we'll have our big 3.

How do you rank them?
I voted for Mongoose, Morton, and Smarmy, in that order but only the Smarmy vote registered.

Would it be possible to add what episode each creature appears in?

Forgive my weak and forgetful brain, but could someone tell me what episodes these monstrosities arose from? I remember the Duck (saints forgive me) and the dirtbike dino and Mongoose (GO MONGOOSE!), but most of the others are either lost in a mental haze or came up before I started listening.

Nice artwork again, Bo! I may actually have nightmares during this round.

I voted and it worked just fine.

And tomorrow I shall do it again. (GO MONGOOSE!)
That was a typographical error--it should have been a blank space.

Unspeakable Duck makes me laugh. Assuming we're not talking about Ducks Are Bastards duck, I think that's one of the archive episodes I haven't heard yet. If someone could point that out, I'd be grateful.

Also, I'd be grateful if everyone would support my campaign for Emperor of English. I'm campaigning on common sense reforms to the English language. Fixing the lay/lie issue and executing those who insist on stating expired grammar dogmas (e.g. poetry must rhyme, sentences must never end with prepositions or begin with prepositions, infinitives must never be split, etc.) are my primary focus.

Morton was way back in Episode 17, one of the nastiest, grossest portraits of superhuman messed up karma ever recorded.

Adding the author/creator and episode number/title to the 'card backs' (stats & info). Dumb oversight on my part. Sorry peoples - more than a couple of these are in fact obscure, and you're not a feeble or forgetful drabble fan for being thrown. As a special treat, I'm going to try and rig in a third button that links directly to the archived mp3 episode.

Vote counting is working 100% - I just tried again to be sure. It's a tiered system, where a different number of 'votes' are added for your ranking. So if Morton is your number 1 selection, his total goes up by 8, Snuffles your number 2, his goes up by 7, all the way down to your number 8, who would only increase by 1. It is all about the order you select the beasts in.

Oh, and I'm swapping deadlines, so I can have a cushion for finishing art - just in case there are violent leader swings in the final days, like, oh say, round 1 or round 2.

Hope that helps.

I hate to say it, but I think Morton might actually be the best fighter there. I mean sure, he's an angry disgusting idiot, but intelligence was never a factor in choosing Green Lanterns anyways. Imagine the messed up things he can create from the depths of his anime porn riddled brain, would you want to fight against that?

I'm in a bit of a pickle here. My instinct is to vote for Mongoose for a variety of reasons (the story was possibly the best DC, her powers are awesome and I want one), but I think she'd wipe the floor with anyone. I don't think it would much of a contest.

So, much as I want to, I don't know if i can bring myself to vote for her.

Morton.... would be fun. Just because he grossed me out so much in the story, and I think he's hated enough that he would get hammered in the voting.

Uncle Smarmy is one of my favourites, but does he really stand a chance? Maybe if he's eaten recently....

This is going to require some careful thought.

Would anybody be shocked to learn that Uncle Smarmy is my top pic? After that, Mongoose (duh - that episode rocked way hard) and then Unspeakable Duck because of the nightmares.

I've decided to go Mongoose ( I know, I'm weak), Uncle Smarmy and Snuffles. Snuffles is just awesome, and a three way fight between Snuffles, Minotard and Big Boris would rumble.

Ducks just have no place in this competition, corckscrew penises or not.

I like the war machines of the merfolk. Those look like a tasty bit of kit, and you know what bastards the merfolk can be.
