MBDM 2012 - Overview

The beast fights have returned - vote to determine which will survive!

The MBDM is an annual tradition around Drabble'land. It represents an open discussion of bi-weekly match-ups between imaginary 'Mega-Beast' monsters, argued over on a bi-weekly, drunken podcast by bi-curious, weepy hosts Norm, Bo, Kendall, Luke, and Adam.
--------------------------------------------------
A gallery of veteran beasts, seasons 1 - 4, can be seen here. Most are dead now. Don't be sad though; they were never really alive.

You've really outdone yourself this year! All the great suggestions pulled together into some hilarious and awesome drawings, mixed with excellent humor. Good work!

Thanks Tom. I get to showboat at the front of the fleet, but MBDM is at it's core is a Drabblecast community event. Listener submitted ideas make things more fun, and we the set of critter competitors is more diverse. Additionally, I'm sure it is a thrill for people to see their ideas visualized. Look out for the new class on February 1st!

Where's the rage Tom??? Now is the time for finger-clenched tantrums, not smiley faces damnit!

The fact that Combat and Nuclear Mole Rat didn't make it out of the preliminaries calls into question (per usual) the integrity of this entire operation. Clearly, (per usual) some sort of collusion is at hand here-- frankly, the whole thing reeks of typical Bo Kaier hoodwinkery.

Total travesty.

Heh. I just got that. Nice joke.

I honestly think that I'm spending so much energy moderating things at work, that I don't know how to get angry anymore. No, that's not an invitation, ASID. :D

Question, will the daily votes per day system be re-implemented using the previous season's website?

Plan is to stick with the fist'em method employed for the heats. Megabeasts.com is being retooled, but site voting is not being reinstated. The site will share info, direct users to voting spots, and distribute the podcast.

The site voting method of seasons past was nearly impossible to keep legitimate. Additionally the new method better accomplishes the the implicit goal of having a death match: spreading the word and expanding the discussion/audience. A key loss in this change of approach is up-to-the-minute results. I'm trying to imagine that born out in the fist'em, and my only recourse is manual, daily site updates (I lack the code wizardry to make a widget).

Suggestions are welcome. The key is the most straightforward set up possible, one which is also conducive to vote solicitation, and impresses upon voters a need to rouse their friends. We want this to "go viral" (forgive my cliched heart).

So let me get this straight:
 No photo identification cards in the primary or general election.
 Your OBJECTIVE is to bring in boatloads of non citizens and immediately enfranchise them, then invite them to start writing drabbles, competing with Scattercat and Munsi for DC's high-paying union jobs.
 These folks will no doubt be settled in purple swing states that traditionally support Phantom Ray, to swing the vote to Red Panda.

This diabolical scheme has the pawprints of ACORN all over it, thus pointing the finger at Squarrel. Only Red Panda would have the utter depravity to come up with such a corrupt scheme. Not since the apparent suicide of Vince Foster have I smelled this familiar scent.

But by total coincidence, the Attorney General, and his deputies Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, and their sex slave, Nancy Grace, have moved to Florida to prosecute the murder committed by Bob Dylan's Hispanic lovechild.

This all fits together much too well not to be true. All one need do is ask, "If I were a vast conspiracy, what would I do?

The answer, as any patriotic devotee of Drabblcast would know, was prophetically delivered in the sacred annals by Lord Mursatz:

GET THAT PANDA!

 too funny.
I'm actually voting for Squarrel though. His frenzied nature and/or gliding ability should make him a hard target for the Phantom Ray's missiles, so the Ray would probably focus more on Red Panda. And that panda wouldn't stand a chance in a close ground melee with a 3 ton rabid squirrel, I'm sorry.

Speaking of which, any idea when we can expect the podcast? I'm looking forward to it, that crew is always hilarious.

Wow, so your going to be calculating votes from round the interwebs and continuously posting the results? Seems like lots of work also! I'm late to the party getting my beast on this year and don't have any other suggestions though. It was nice knowing in real-time who was ahead last year, but i guess that's not how it works in general elections either. I guess the next natural step is for some misleading agenda-driven pollsters to start popping up. :D

So to vote people have to either register to facebook or the drabblecast forums? I guess most people have facebook already. Should cut down on shenanigans at least, unless Bo is shenanigan-prone himself.

Site voting or no, listeners have always relied on my moral character for results. I had .txt files, as easy to manipulate as any multi-site tally. At least in this new set up, the votes are all public, should someone wish to impugn my maths.

Addittionaly, were I a cheater, there is no way Squarrel and Flamingoliath would have advanced. Suckerpaunch and Racoontaur would have pulled spectacular upsets.

I gotta say, your epic hacking hijinks were perhaps the highlight of the season for me last year. Granted, even a half-way realistic dream about eating tacos would have probably claimed that title. But either way, your chicanery shall be missed.

I think this first round will ultimately prove whether or not Bo is rigging votes for this thing or not. If Red Panda wins, Bo has clearly colluded with the communist party. If Phantom Ray wins, Bo just can't remember how counting works. If Squarrel wins, I guess it must have been fighting a panda with back-mounted gun turrets and a giant flying manta ray.

Follow your hearts here people and rally votes for the berserker Cujo-Squirrel. 3 tons of skiddish, unpredictable, pain-resilient fury.

I don't think this will help my cause at all, but I do think it will make you want to adopt a squirrel right this very second.
