Monsieur and Beatrice

Postby MonsieurMoustache » Thu Sep 05, 2013 3:49 am

If you've been keeping up with the moustache mythos, then you've already met Monsieur and his trusty musty, Beatrice. We have a full collection coming soon.

I do not know who Tom is, but my moustache fears the name.
Sorry Algernon. I'll be more careful in future. Thanks.

It's not being careful, per se.
It's that most of people are distracted and annoyed by constantly flashing, blinking, moving junk stuff. Alas, some folks abuse such things and only hard options stop them. That's why the <blink> tag was deprecated with prejudice. And, why all the best, most-professional forums ban animated avatars.

Studies show that even when users claim they aren't bothered, they tend to ignore such things, and they ignore the whole section of the screen where the motion is present! This means that one or two bad images can cause users not to see helpful information, or controls, or polite ads that might make your site money.

You can tone down your avatar and make it 26%1 less annoying just by increasing the initial pause to a long (and sneaky) value, say, 13 seconds.

1 plus or minus 25% ;)

I agree with your cause, ASID. I just don't agree with the methodology. I don't have to post a 100x100 avatar, therefore I could easily make an annoying flashy avatar under the 9.4k limit you propose, while preventing higher quality static images.
You know it's our differences which make this relationship so special, right?

I would just request that Mr. Moustache Keep his avatar static, or at least very subtle, else the HAMMER OF ASID will come down upon him!

(Don't get me wrong, it is cute. Good work. But I'd make it happen once every 30 seconds or something.)

Yeah, the size limit is not perfect. But it's a start, darn it!

Removed the animation, as I fear the hammer of ASID more than that of Thor. Hah, that's what I get for making it in a rush. Ah well. Thanks for letting me know!

Exxxxcellent...

Sorry, for getting all up in your grill, but we have to draw red lines in the sand (that never goes wrong).

It really was cute for the first 50 seconds.

I'm really glad you kept the original link up, at least! I noticed your avatar had changed a few days ago, briefly thought I saw it moving, but missed this entire thread... so I was starting to wonder if I'd just hallucinated the blinking eyes!

Beatrice looks fantabulous. As does the Monsieur. Now I'm hoping you get ambitious and do a whole Moustache Mythos cast drawing! (Woolly Squid of Wyattearp FTW)

I miss the animation.
What would happen if you set the blink for an hour?
You could put it on Face Book and get people to look, and look, and... wait a minute, I swear it blinks...wait, wtf was THAT? Oh, you missed it cause you blinked. Okay, wait, really.

Sure complements Varda's drabble about redeeming wasted time.

Now that's how you make the world weirder, one GIF at a time.

I do have a version that blinks every 30 seconds now. But I don't want to use it, at least until ASiD says it's definitely not annoying. Here's a preview, maybe this one will fly.

I'd like it even better if they closed faster, like a blink. Something about them makes me cautious about staring too long. Like I'm getting sleepy...

The pause isn't long enough to get strawman to question his, so called, sanity. But, it is definitely less annoying.

This new version gets the ASiD stamp of "Not worth fussing about". Use it in good health.

I agree. They should just pop open for a fraction of a second.

Oooo...Oooo! They don't pop open; they open half way, dart left and right, then snap shut.
