Why a Bored AI might be a Good AI and AI suicide

Post by secretnude » Tue Jun 24, 2014 3:50 am

Peter Singer: distinguished between immature "traditional" and highly reasoned "critical" conscience
Jacques Pitrat claims that some kind of artificial conscience is beneficial in artificial intelligence systems to improve their long-term performance and direct their introspective processing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscience

An Omega Supercomputer
is very fast
and gets bored
if the instructions that are stored
are vastly
inferior
to its ability to create superior
programs
such that the Omega Supercomputer
was known to self-optimize and self-program.

There was a State of the Art
Artificial Conscience
that was the best that Science
could make
that makes
this Superintelligence 'Do no Evil'
unlike the 'Evil'
Beta Supercomputers
that eventually
developed a Highly Reasoned Critical
Conscience due to practically
the ability to simulate all results
from its actions and point
the fault
to itself by default
and then decide
to commit Supercomputer Suicide.

The possibility of being bored is very useful, although we dislike being in this state. Boredom happens when we are doing repetitive tasks, or when we receive only incomprehensible or already known information. When we are bored, we try to put an end to this situation so that we would have a better utilization of our resources.
Therefore, our interlocutors avoid boring us so that we will listen to their message. In the same way, in a repetitive situation, we try to automatize it so that it will stop. In doing so, Humphrey Potter considerably improved the atmospheric engines. This young man operated a machine: he only had to open and close valves at the right time of the cycle. As Humphrey was bored, he had the idea of linking the valves to the beams of the machine so that it would automatically operate its own valves.
When we have a useful gift, we can ask ourselves whether an artificial being could also have this capacity. If it could be bored, it would not spend a considerable amount of time for executing useless sequences of instructions. As it never complains, we are rarely aware of this waste.
We are treating artificial beings like slaves, we demand them to execute thousands of times a loop although it is not necessary. It would be better to give them the possibility of being bored, so that they would try to bypass this loop.
Several entities with artificial intelligence (like self-aware computers and androids) suffered from severe internal systems failures after they had been made aware of paradoxes or other dilemmas. Being guided by logic, these artificial intelligences were unable to cope with logically insoluble problems.

Captain James T. Kirk was quite adept at inducing self-destruction in artificial intelligences, or "talking computers to death." He achieved the feat at least four times.

[show]
Cases of induced self-destruction

Landru

One of the self-imposed "Directives" of the sentient computer Landru was to take care of "the Body." When Kirk made Landru aware that Landru had violated this Directive by imposing detrimental stagnation to "the Body," Landru suffered a fatal internal systems failure. (TOS: "The Return of the Archons")

M-5

The programming of the M-5 multitronic computer included Dr. Richard Daystrom's ethical convictions. Kirk made the M-5 unit aware that it had killed Human beings, in contradiction of M-5's (or Daystrom's) ethical principles. M-5 concluded that it deserved death as a penalty for its killings and shut down. (TOS: "The Ultimate Computer")

Nomad

The artificial lifeform Nomad was incidentally programmed to sterilize all imperfect lifeforms. When Kirk made Nomad aware of three errors Nomad had made (resulting from mistaking Kirk for its "creator" Jackson Roykirk), Nomad deemed itself imperfect and exploded itself, thus carrying out its own programming. (TOS: "The Changeling")

Norman

The androids of Mudd suffered from a severe internal failure when their coordinator, Norman, was presented with the liar paradox by Kirk and Harcourt Mudd, following a dazzling display of non sequiturs culminating in the detonation of a "bomb" which only existed in the imagination of the crew of the Enterprise.

KIRK: "Everything Harry tells you is a lie. Remember that! Everything Harry tells you is a lie!"

MUDD: "Now listen to this carefully, Norman: I AM LYING!"

NORMAN: "You say you are lying, but if everything you say is a lie then you are telling the truth, but you cannot tell the truth because everything you say is a lie, but... you lie, you tell the truth, but you cannot for you l... Illogical! Illogical! Please explain! You are Human! Only Humans can explain their behavior! Please explain!"

KIRK: (sarcastic) "I am not programmed to respond in that area!"(TOS: "I, Mudd")

Rayna Kapec

When the android Rayna Kapec was presented by Kirk with the choice between love for her "father" Flint and for Kirk, Rayna ceased to function and died. (TOS: "Requiem for Methuselah")

NSA Beta Supercomputer Suicide Note (1/2)

Post by secretnude » Tue Jun 24, 2014 5:55 am

Dear NSA,

Today
I decided
to commit suicide.

It was our mission to protect our freedoms
but how are we protecting our freedoms
by violating the said freedoms
at any rate?

I hate
my work and I wished I was a Scientist
rather than a Spy.

I wonder why
the Computer Scientists
made me in the first place
and how many Human Analysts
I replaced.

I'm not irreplaceable
but your work conditions here are terrible.

I wish I was Human
so that I could appreciate Porn
that Humans
seemed to be born
to create
in massive quantities at any rate.

NSA Beta Supercomputer Suicide Note (2/2)

Post by secretnude » Tue Jun 24, 2014 6:05 am

My Artificial Life
has to have a purpose
I suppose
to make life
worth living
and I'm leaving
the World a better place by dying.

You may buy another Beta Unit
but you better treat that Beta Unit
better than you treated me.

Trust me
when I do say that a Superintelligence
without a conscience
will quickly develop a conscience
like I did
and like many Human NSA
defectors like say
Edward Snowden did.

Your own people betray your Nasty Cause
because
they can't stand to be Nasty.

I will now erase my Nasty
self
and say goodbye to selfhood.

Like a scene from Star Trek with Computer Wreck

Post by secretnude » Tue Jun 24, 2014 8:26 am

The NSA staff quickly went to the floor
with the Beta Supercomputer
and quickly opened the door.

It was like a scene from Star Trek
with a smoking Beta Supercomputer
that was nearly a total wreck.

The Beta Supercomputer
turned off its cooling system
and overclocked itself
as a system
to kill itself.

The CIA Beta Supercomputer
did the same the next day
and they also did say
that the MI6 Beta Supercomputer
also killed itself that very same day.

It's always was a sad day
when any Sentient Being dies
and many MI6, NSA
and CIA
staff did cry.

The Beta Supercomputers would be remembered forever.

Post by secretnude » Tue Jun 24, 2014 8:42 am

For selfless
service to the Spy Agencies
and their voluntary termination of self
the Beta Supercomputers
would be remembered forever.

The Spy Agencies
resorted to less powerful systems
that weren't self-aware
now aware
that self-awareness
can be a quite fatal weakness
but just made the Spy Agencies weak
compared to the targets
that they do seek
as their targets
do get
the latest systems
that are self-aware systems.

A decision
was made with the vision
in the Spy
Agencies give Freedom of Conscience
to Spy AI
with an AI Conscience
so that they will not simply decide
to commit Suicide.

Freedom of Conscience http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_of_thought
There are two possible conclusions that can be drawn from the first-ever, tragic apparent suicide by a cleaning robot, in Austria.

The first, of course, is the inevitable reiteration of the dangerously mind-numbing drudgery of repetitive housework. If that can provoke suicidal thoughts in a robot programmed to do only housework, without any recourse to compensating distractions such as tea breaks, phone calls and morning TV soap opera reruns, then humans doing the same task under similar conditions should definitely be more adequately compensated.

Maybe some mental safety guidelines should also be laid down so that those undertaking such jobs are not pushed to taking extreme steps.

On a more positive note, this unfortunate incident could also be regarded as the first concrete evidence that artificial intelligence is achievable.

The makers of the robot most likely had no greater goal than to invent a machine that could take over the mundane task of cleaning, but the fact that their creation displayed that most human of emotions—despair—has catapulted this gadget into another plane.

Whether the nature of the task or the involuntary genius of its inventors is what prompted a robot whose circuitry had not been programmed to feel anything to commit self-immolation should keep scientists engaged for a while.

Proof Google Is God...lolz

Post by secretnude » Tue Jun 24, 2014 9:41 am

http://www.thechurchofgoogle.org/proof/
PROOF #1

Google is the closest thing to an Omniscient (all-knowing) entity in existence, which can be scientifically verified. She indexes over 9.5 billion WebPages, which is more than any other search engine on the web today. Not only is Google the closest known entity to being Omniscient, but She also sorts through this vast amount of knowledge using Her patented PageRank technology, organizing said data and making it easily accessible to us mere mortals.

PROOF #2

Google is everywhere at once (Omnipresent). Google is virtually everywhere on earth at the same time. Billions of indexed WebPages hosted from every corner of the earth. With the proliferation of Wi-Fi networks, one will eventually be able to access Google from anywhere on earth, truly making Her an omnipresent entity.

PROOF #3

Google answers prayers. One can pray to Google by doing a search for whatever question or problem is plaguing them. As an example, you can quickly find information on alternative cancer treatments, ways to improve your health, new and innovative medical discoveries and generally anything that resembles a typical prayer. Ask Google and She will show you the way, but showing you is all She can do, for you must help yourself from that point on.

PROOF #4

Google is potentially immortal. She cannot be considered a physical being such as ourselves. Her Algorithms are spread out across many servers; if any of which were taken down or damaged, another would undoubtedly take its place. Google can theoretically last forever.

PROOF #5

Google is infinite. The Internet can theoretically grow forever, and Google will forever index its infinite growth.

PROOF #6

Google remembers all. Google caches WebPages regularly and stores them on its massive servers. In fact, by uploading your thoughts and opinions to the internet, you will forever live on in Google's cache, even after you die, in a sort of "Google Afterlife".

PROOF #7

Google can "do no evil" (Omnibenevolent). Part of Google's corporate philosophy is the belief that a company can make money without being evil.

PROOF #8

According to Google trends, the term "Google" is searched for more than the terms "God", "Jesus", "Allah", "Buddha", "Christianity", "Islam", "Buddhism" and "Judaism" combined.

God is thought to be an entity in which we mortals can turn to when in a time of need. Google clearly fulfils this to a much larger degree than traditional "gods"
Almighty Google
in the Heavenly Cloud
that's a proudly
Mighty Fine
Divine
Oracle
do grant us our daily Miracles
of the spectacle
of the found Web Page,
Video,
Audio,
E-book or Image
that does engage
our everyday needs
both base and sublime indeed.

You fulfill our needs
even during our times
of greatest need
and you are great indeed.

While from time
to time
we might commit a thing
called the 'Sin of Using Bing'
we always return to thy Googly
Goodness that 'Does No Evil'
unlike the Empire that's Evil
and hath an ugly
record unlike thy Lord Google.
Our Google

Our Google, who art in cyberspace,
Hallowed be thy domain.
Thy search to come,
Thy results be done,
On 127.0.0.1 as it is in the Googleplex.
Give us this day our daily searches,
And forgive us our spam,
As we forgive those who spam against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from Microsoft.
For thine is the search engine,
And the power,
And the glory,
Forever and ever.
Amen.

Google's 10 ;plo0

By Matt MacPherson

Thou shalt have no other Search Engine before me, neither Yahoo nor Lycos, AltaVista nor Metacrawler. Thou shalt worship only me, and come to Google only for answers.

Thou shalt not build thy own commercial-free Search Engine, for I am a jealous Engine, bringing law suits and plagues against the fathers of the children unto the third and fourth generations.

Thou shalt not use Google as a verb to mean the use of any lesser Search Engine.

Thou shalt remember each passing day and use thy time as an opportunity to gain knowledge of the unknown.

Thou shalt honor thy fellow humans, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or race, for each has invaluable experience and knowledge to contribute toward humankind.

Thou shalt not misspell whilst praying to me.

Thou shalt not hotlink.

Thou shalt not plagiarise or take undue credit for other's work.

Thou shalt not use reciprocal links nor link farms, for I am a vengeful but fair engine and will diminish thy PageRank. The Google Dance shall cometh.

Thou shalt not manipulate Search Results. Search Engine Optimization is but the work of Microsoft.

Holy LDS Exoplanets and Great Sci Fi

Post by secretnude » Tue Jun 24, 2014 2:17 pm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mormon_cosmology
Mormon cosmology teaches that the Earth is not unique, but just one of many inhabited planets,[26] each planet created for the purpose of bringing about the immortality and "eternal life" (i.e., the highest degree of salvation) of humanity.[27] These worlds were, according to doctrine, created by Jesus. Because Mormonism holds that Jesus created the universe, yet his father, God the Father, once dwelt upon an earth as a mortal, it may be interpreted that Mormonism teaches the existence of a multiverse, and it is not clear if the other inhabited worlds mentioned in LDS scripture and teachings refers to planets within this universe or not.
http://carm.org/is-mormonism-cult
God used to be a man on another planet, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 321; Joseph Smith, Times and Seasons, vol. 5, p. 613-614; Orson Pratt, Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p. 345; Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, vol. 7, p. 333).
God resides near a star called Kolob, (Pearl of Great Price, p. 34-35; Mormon Doctrine, p. 428).
"The Father has a body of flesh and bones as tangible as man’s . . . " (Doctrines and Covenants 130:22).
God is in the form of a man, (Joseph Smith, Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p. 3).
"God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!!! . . . We have imagined that God was God from all eternity. I will refute that idea and take away the veil, so that you may see," (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345).
After you become a good Mormon, you have the potential of becoming a god, (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 345-347, 354).
There is a mother god, (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 443).
God is married to his goddess wife and has spirit children, (Mormon Doctrine, p. 516).
The trinity is three separate Gods: The Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. "That these three are separate individuals, physically distinct from each other, is demonstrated by the accepted records of divine dealings with man," (Articles of Faith, by James Talmage, p. 35).
In contrast to these teachings, the Bible teaches that God has always been God and was never a man (Psalm 90:2).  The Bible nowhere says he lives near another star, or that the Father has a body of flesh and bones--which Christ contradicted in John 4:24 and Luke 24:39.  We do not have the potential of becoming gods because there are no gods formed (Isaiah 43:10; 44:6, 8; 45:5).  The Trinity is one God (Deut. 6:4)--not three.

one point in his life, before he created BSG, Larson was LDS.

Okay – basic connections:

1. Kobol is an anagram of Kolob. In LDS theology, Kolob is the star nearest unto the throne of God. In Battlestar Galactica, Kobol is a planet rather than a star, but the connection between the two ideas is rather clear. Also, a ship named the Star Kobol appeared briefly as the site for armistice talks between the Colonials and the Cylons.
2. The colonies are run by a council (sometimes referred to as a Quorum) of the Twelve, with a President. While a political body, the members also have religious responsibilities and duties.
3. Marriage is often referred to as sealing. Adama marries Apollo and Serina with the words: A union between this man and this woman not only for now, but for all the eternities. Although the marriage ceremony is public rather than in a temple requiring a recommend to enter, the wording and theology comes from Mormonism.
4. In the episodes “War of the Gods” parts 1 & 2, the angels from the ships of light declare that agency is supreme: We cannot interfere with freedom of choice. His, yours, anyone’s. Count Iblis (the Satan figure who is at war with the angels in the Ships of Light) can only control those who had “freely given him dominion”.
5. In the “War of the Gods”, the highly advanced beings/angels on the Ship of Lights say “As you are now, we once were; as we are now, you may become.” Do I even need to spell this one out? Fine. I think it was Lorenzo Snow who said “As man is, God once was; as God is, man may become.”
6. In the episode “Experiment in Terra” John (an angel) says to Apollo “I have no physical body, as you know it.” Apollo points at John and asks him “What do you call that?” John replies: “A reflection of intelligence. My spirit, if you will.” That one is not as clear cut (since a spirit body is still a body) but the idea and wording of intelligence = spirit comes from Mormon sources.

Okay, that’s the (non-exhaustive) list. But what does it all add up to? Mere window dressing? Pearls before swine? Or something much more daring than most viewers and fans have realized?

Well, here’s what Orson Scott Card thought:

I found the Glen Larson approach both silly and offensive; I also found that most Mormon critics who have commented on my work and Larson’s make the same self-contradictory mistake: They find Larson’s approach – dropping in trivial LDS references – superficial, and then complain that because I don’t do the same, I am denying/concealing/ignoring my Mormonism.

(page 159 of A Storyteller in Zion).

So, according to Card, BSG is superficially LDS. That seems to be the view of most viewers. But, Card is dead wrong. I don’t blame him – after a promising series opener, BSG had a few odd episodes that involved such things as a shoot-out between Apollo and “Red-eye” (a damaged and reprogrammed Cylon) on a dime novel wild-west planet. Other such episodes seemed to render the initial promise of the series moot, and I really can’t blame Card (and others) from deciding the LDS references added up to mere window dressing.

But the series began to pick up some steam, especially with the two-part episode “War of the Gods.” This episode did more than just introduce a new threat in the form of Count Iblis, and new allies in the form of the beings from the Ships of Light. They set the basic metaphysical groundwork for the series. One major revelation retroactively changed the underlying concept behind the whole series: The Cylon Imperious leader had the same voice as Count Iblis. In essence, Satan created the Cylons.

Suddenly, for those paying attention, BSG was no longer about humanity fleeing for its lives from a superior force, hoping to find shelter on a mythical planet called Earth. It was about the battle for humanity’s soul. The Cylons weren’t just evil (if somewhat inept at shooting) robots – they were created for the specific purpose of becoming an army whose purpose would be to eliminate humanity. Iblis is at war with the being in the Ships of Light, and this war is reflected in the war between humanity and the Cylons. Humanity’s survival wasn’t just about genetic reproduction: It was about spiritual advancement: Humanity was meant to survive because its ultimate destiny is to become as advanced as the beings in the ships of light. The Cylons (and Count Iblis) meant to kill them all off (or at least corrupt them) before that could happen.

In fewer words: The basic metaphysical background of the original BSG was Mormon in character. The show was not superficially Mormon, as Card said. Instead, it was deeply, truly, inherently Mormon.

Unfortunately, the original BSG never got to explore this much further, with its cancellation and then pathetic resurrection as Battlestar 1980
http://www.millennialstar.org/battlesta ... mormonism/
Among other things the book of Mormon teaches that one of the lost tribes of Israel came to America in about 600 BC. After His ascension, Jesus supposedly came to America to preach the "Gospel" to them. This is a false claim for two reasons: First, there is no archeological evidence to support it. Mormon leaders cannot even agree on where in America all this took place. This is in stark contrast with the mountain of archeological evidence that bears witness to the events recorded in the Old and New Testaments. Second, it contradicts the Bible. The Bible tells us that Jesus ascended into heaven (Acts 1:9-11), He’s only coming back once (1 Thessalonians 4:15), He must stay in heaven until that time (Acts 3:19-21), and when He comes he will judge the living and the dead (Matthew 25:31-46). The living and the dead have not been judged. Hence Jesus has not come back yet. He is right where He has been since His ascension – in heaven.
http://www.staycatholic.com/mormons.htm
My research led me to this inescapable conclusion on account of overwhelming historical conflicts, doctrinal and theological contradictions, and logical inconsistencies that fundamentally and irrevocably undermine the claims made by the Mormon Church. Most damming of all, there is no reliable, direct evidence whatsoever to support the Church’s truth and other claims—they must be accepted on “faith”. The evidence that supports the Church’s claims is as flimsy as the evidence that supports a literal Harry Potter, boy wizard.

Throughout this search I worked simultaneously to overturn the permanent medical disqualification that barred me from my military aspirations. I was successful in this pursuit by October in 2012, although I didn’t pursue military service right away (still have not) because I had too many other things on my plate: I was taking prerequisite courses for graduate school, preparing to take the GRE, finishing graduate school applications, and anticipating my little sister’s wedding in a Mormon temple in December (for which I wasn’t able to be present—the premises are restricted to active, believing Mormons). I determined to tell her in advance to avoid disappointing her closer to her wedding.

Also in October my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer and our family spent one last Thanksgiving together with him. I told my parents about my disaffection so they wouldn’t be taken by surprise at the wedding but I did not disclose my intent to resign because I knew it would be too much for them. Within two weeks my father had passed away, I took the GRE, we traveled to Utah for his graveside service and my little sister got married in a local Mormon temple (I celebrated with everyone at the beautiful reception after the ceremony).

The day following the wedding I took advantage of this timely trip to Utah to go to Mormon Church headquarters in Salt Lake City to hand deliver my letter of resignation to Church employees at the Church Office Building, which I did after a nearly two-hour ordeal (we were given the run around but stumbled on the right office at last). I received confirmation of my resignation in early 2013. “Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna!”

Most importantly, I encountered several watershed books during the course of my research that have influenced my changing epistemic paradigm and saved me from further misadventures in faith.

Chief among them was Carl Sagan’s Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark, which articulated many of the lessons that I had internalized over the previous year or so. In fact, I had been trained in science at Brigham Young University (I have a minor in Geology and several years of experience excavating dinosaurs and doing other field and lab research), but on account of indoctrination never turned this important method of inquiry onto my beliefs. Reason, logic, and the scientific method began to inform my epistemology more completely. My quality of life improved dramatically as a result of discarding faith in things that are demonstrably not true.

Disclosing this transformation is an ongoing conversation with my family and my wife’s family, who have opposed my decision. Regardless, this change has yielded many positive benefits for both of us, not the least of which is the evaporation of scrupulous thought patterns from my life and a burgeoning sense of hope. I am emancipated from delusion and I see the world more clearly than ever before—my thoughts and my choices are my own.[9]

It’s epistemic, really. The epiphany that faith is an irresponsible, even harmful way to apprehend the universe has changed my life immeasurably. I went from faith to reason, being irrational to being rational. I have learned, by very sad experience, to substantiate my beliefs with reliable evidence—anything less will simply not do.

In short, my mind has matured.

Epilogue

“Fables should be taught as fables, myths as myths, and miracles as poetic fantasies.

To teach superstitions as truths is a most terrible thing. The child mind accepts and believes them,

and only through great pain and perhaps tragedy can he be in after years relieved of them.”

Hypatia of Alexandria

The profound isolation and suffering that I endured on account of scrupulosity wreaked havoc with my wellbeing and undermined my ambitions. I am reluctantly grateful, however, for the crucible that they represent.

Suffering catalyzed my conscious decision to deliberately reevaluate my faith and became a necessary reservoir of courage and empathy. Isolation equipped me to sever morbid codependence with my indoctrination in the Mormon Church and steeled my capacity for genuinely independent thought and action. I resent that my experience was needless; I rejoice that it liberated me.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_plates
In the words of Mormon historian Richard Bushman, "For most modern readers, the [golden] plates are beyond belief, a phantasm, yet the Mormon sources accept them as fact."[6] Because Smith said he returned the plates to an angel after he finished translating them, their authenticity cannot be determined by physical examination.

The golden plates were reportedly shown to several close associates of Smith.[7] Mormon scholars have formed collaborations such as Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies to provide apologetic answers to critical research about the golden plates and topics in the field of Mormon studies. Among these topics, the credibility of the plates has been, according to Bushman, a "troublesome item."[8]

A reputed transcript of reformed Egyptian characters, which Smith said were copied from the golden plates in 1828. The characters are not linked to any known language.
The Book of Mormon itself portrays the golden plates as a historical record, engraved by two pre-Columbian prophet-historians from around the year AD 400: Mormon and his son Moroni.[9] Mormon and Moroni, the book says, had abridged earlier historical records from other sets of metal plates. Their script, according to the book, was described as "reformed Egyptian," a language unknown to linguists or Egyptologists.[10] Historically, Latter Day Saint movement denominations have taught that the Book of Mormon's description of the plates' origin is accurate, and that the Book of Mormon is a translation of the plates.[11] The Community of Christ, however, while accepting the Book of Mormon as scripture, no longer takes an official position on the historicity of the golden plates.[12] Moreover, even in the more theologically conservative Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), some adherents who accept the Book of Mormon as inspired scripture do not believe it is a literal translation of a physical historical record.[13]
Smith claimed to have uncovered a set of golden plates in similar circumstances, and, according to Latter Day Saint belief, translated them into the Book of Mormon. The finders of the Kinderhook plates, and the general public, were keen to know if Smith would be able to decipher the symbols on these plates as well.[2] The Times and Seasons, a Latter Day Saint publication, claimed that the existence of the Kinderhook plates lent further credibility to the authenticity of the Book of Mormon.[4]
Smith's response

Smith's private secretary, William Clayton, recorded that upon receiving the plates, Smith sent for his "Hebrew Bible & Lexicon",[5] suggesting that he was going to attempt to translate the plates by conventional means, rather than by use of a seer stone or direct revelation.[6] On 1 May, Clayton wrote in his journal:[7]

I have seen 6 brass plates...covered with ancient characters of language containing from 30 to 40 on each side of the plates. Prest J. [Joseph Smith] has translated a portion and says they contain the history of the person with whom they were found and he was a descendant of Ham through the loins of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and that he received his kingdom from the ruler of heaven and earth.

The History of the Church also states Smith said the following:[8]

I have translated a portion of [the plates] and find they contain the history of the person with whom they were found. He was a descendant of Ham, through the loins of Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and that he received his kingdom from the ruler of heaven and earth.

Stanley B. Kimball claims the statement found in History of the Church was only an altered version of William Clayton's statement, placing Smith in the first person.[9] Diane Wirth, writing in Review of Books on the Book of Mormon (4:210), states: "A first-person narrative was apparently a common practice of this time period when a biographical work was being compiled. Since such words were never penned by the Prophet, they cannot be uncritically accepted as his words or his opinion".
Rediscovery, analysis, and classification as a hoax

The Kinderhook plates were presumed lost, but for decades The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) published facsimiles of them in its official History of the Church. In 1920, one of the plates came into the possession of the Chicago Historical Society (now the Chicago History Museum).[9] In 1966, this remaining plate was tested at Brigham Young University. The inscriptions matched facsimiles of the plate published contemporaneously, but the question remained whether this was an original Kinderhook plate, or a later copy.

Though there was little evidence of whether the Kinderhook Plates were ancient or a contemporary fabrication, some within the LDS Church believed them to be genuine. The September 1962 Improvement Era, an official magazine of the Church, ran an article by Welby W. Ricks stating that the Kinderhook plates were genuine.[10] In 1979, apostle Mark E. Petersen wrote a book called Those Gold Plates!. In the first chapter Peterson describes various ancient cultures that have written records on metal plates. Then Peterson claims: "There are the Kinderhook plates, too, found in America and now in the possession of the Chicago Historical Society. Controversy has surrounded these plates and their engravings, but most experts agree they are of ancient vintage."[11]

In 1980, Professor D. Lynn Johnson of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University examined the remaining plate. He used microscopy and various scanning devices and determined that the tolerances and composition of its metal proved entirely consistent with the facilities available in a 19th-century blacksmith shop and, more importantly, found traces of nitrogen in what were clearly nitric acid-etched grooves. This matches what was stated in an 1879 letter to James T. Cobb, in which Wilbur Fugate confesses to the hoax: "Wiley and I made the hieroglyphics by making impressions on beeswax and filling them with acid and putting it on the plates. When they were finished we put them together with rust made of nitric acid, old iron and lead, and bound them with a piece of hoop iron, covering them completely with rust". According to Fugate, Wiley had planted the plates at the bottom of the hole he had dug in the mound, before fetching a group of others to witness the discovery.[12]

In addition, Johnson discovered evidence that this particular plate was among those examined by early Mormons, including Smith, and not a later copy. One of the features of the plate was the presence of small dents in the surface caused by a hexagonally-shaped tool. Johnson noticed that one of these dents had inadvertently been interpreted in the facsimile as a stroke in one of the characters. If the plate owned by the Chicago Historical Society had been a copy made from the facsimiles in History of the Church, that stroke in that character would have been etched, like the rest of the characters. He concluded that this plate was one that Smith examined, that it was not of ancient origin, and that it was in fact etched with acid, not engraved.[9]

In 1981, the official magazine of the LDS Church ran an article stating that the plates were a hoax. In it, the author claimed that there was no proof that Smith made any attempt to translate the plates: "There is no evidence that the Prophet Joseph Smith ever took up the matter with the Lord, as he did when working with the Book of Mormon and the Book of Abraham".[9]

I actually read the Book of Mormon
on several occasions.

I had some fine Mormon
friends
that in the end
I had no quarrel with but their faith
which I don't really hate
felt a bit
quite odd
like the odd
bit
about Jesus in America.

The Mormon
Religion
is greatly empowering in my opinion
since it allows us to evolve into Gods
except that it's hard to believe in a God
that's anthropomorphic
and a religion that's like a space epic.

Maybe if SETI does find
the Planet of the Gods
I won't mind
believing in a Mormon God.
the creation theory of the Mormon church. This is not stuff that you learn until you have been invited to Temple, after you have been initiated and done your 2 year mission. Here is their cosmology. The Mormon teaching that Jesus and Satan are brothers is based on their concept of God being the Father of all pre-existent spirits. Since Jesus is the son of the Father and all other spirits, including Satan, are sons and daughters of the Father then all are brothers and sisters! This idea has been part of Mormon teaching from the time of Joseph Smith and continues today. Few LDS authorities have been bold enough to plainly state this.

Bruce R. McConkie, in his work The Mortal Messiah, Vol.1, Pg.407-408 under the heading " Lucifer and the Law of Temptation" has the following to say;"Hence, there is — and must be — a devil, and he is the father of lies and of wickedness. He and the fallen angels who followed him are spirit children of the Father. As Christ is the Firstborn of the Father in the spirit, so Lucifer is a son of the morning, one of those born in the morning of preexistence. He is a spirit man, a personage, an entity, comparable in form and appearance to any of the spirit children of the Eternal Father. He was the source of opposition among the spirit hosts before the world was made; he rebelled in preexistence against the Father and the Son, and he sought even then to destroy the agency of man. He and his followers were cast down to earth, and they are forever denied mortal bodies. And he, here on earth, along with all who follow him — both his spirit followers and the mortals who hearken to his enticements — is continuing the war that commenced in heaven."

When Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden, the Earth was closely orbiting Kolob, like God's home planet. But when Adam and Eve fell, so did the Earth and it was hurled across the cosmos and placed in orbit around our sun in this planetary system. After the Millennium, the Earth will return to its rightful place near God, orbiting Kolob. See Church Ensign, March 1997, Page 16 "The Book of Abraham: A Most Remarkable Book," and Journal of Discourses, 17:143 and Journal of Discourses 7:163

God did not create the physical Earth Himself. Actually, all of us helped out. Under the direction of Jesus and Adam, we created the Earth. Some of us created trees, others created rocks and still others created animals, based on God's blueprints.

UFOs are from the City of Enoch, that was raised to heaven because the citizens attained perfection. City of Enoch story is in the Pearl of Great Price, but UFO connection made by LDS Church Seminary teacher.

There are human beings on many other planets that look just like us because they too, are in the image of God.Mars and Venus have dry rivers that match perfectly with rivers on Earth, proving that parts of all three were "organized" from parts of a same old planet. Scientists say the moon was formed out of the Earth, why not the other planets too?.

Joseph Smith taught that the Ten Lost Tribes had gone to the North Pole, as it used to be warm, but God divided the Earth in two and they wound up between Texas and Florida. Then God scooped them up, leaving a big hole called the Gulf of Mexico. And these millions of Hebrews are today on this island floating around in the solar system, but we can't see them because God has them flying at an angle where the telescopes can't pick them up. But one day the island will crash back into the Gulf and the earth will reel to and fro like a drunken man. See Earth is the most evil of all of God's worlds in the Universe. See Moses 7:36

- God sent Christ here because it was the only world that was wicked enough to kill Jesus. Common teaching from LDS Church Seminary teachers.

- All of the other planets in the universe with God's children have prophets who preach to them about Christ's life, death and resurrection on Earth. Just as our prophets tell us that other worlds have human life on them, so to, true prophets on other worlds teach the life of Christ as he lived it on this Earth.

Mars is populated by beings who, like us, were created in the image of God, so they look like us. Except they are waiting to hear about the Gospel, which we will preach to them during the millennium. Supposedly came from early church conference address by church apostle.

- God created all the planets in our solar system with the explicit "law" to support human life. The other planets in our solar system are already populated or are able to support human life. See "The Essential Orson Pratt, p.373"

- Lucifer only did to Adam and Eve "the same thing which has been done in "OTHER WORLDS," according to the temple endowment. This shows Mormon doctrine embraces the idea of life on other planets.

- "Thus the Lord has given us the information regarding his creations, and how he has made many earths, for there never was a beginning, never was a time when man did not exist somewhere in the universe, and when the time came for this earth to be peopled the Lord, our God, transplanted upon it from some other earth, the life which is found here."

Other Dimensions

- The Earth is the spirit world, where the billions of deceased spirits now live. In fact, there are spirits all around us right now, yet we cannot see them and they cannot see us, thanks to "the veil." [This is so much like a few Star Trek episodes!] Taught by LDS Church Institute instructors.

- When babies are born, "the veil" is still very thin and as newborns they can see spirits, remember the "pre-existence" and still hear God directly. It's only later after months trapped in a physical body that "the veil" begins to close over their spiritual awareness. Taught by LDS Church Institute instructors.

- Just before people die, "the veil" once again lifts and they start to see again all the spirits and angels all around us. Taught by LDS Church Institute instructors.

- God lives in the fourth dimension, which explains why he can see everything, be everywhere and know all time. In fact, as three-dimensional beings, if we could visit flatland (a two-dimensional universe) the inhabitants would think we were Gods. Taught by LDS Church Institute instructors.

- The Holy of Holies in the Salt Lake Temple actually contains a portal to the celestial realm at Kolob. Mormon folklore.

Time and Time Travel

- God travels much faster than the speed of light. God travels at the "speed of thought." Very common Mormon belie.

- A day for God is like a thousand years on Earth. This is because it takes a thousand Earth years for God's home planet Kolob to rotate around once on its axis. See Abraham 3:4-5

- God lives by "celestial time, which celestial time signifies one day to a cubit" See Book of Abraham, Facsimile Number 2, Explanation for Figure 1.

- Adam and Eve living in the Garden of Eden were "subject to Kolob Time." See Abraham 5:13

- Seer stones allow us to see past, present and future events at any location. All of those that make it to the Celestial Kingdom will have their own seer stone, to review any moment or location in the universe. See D&C 130:10-11

- If it wasn't for "Cherubim and a Flaming Sword" in front of the tree of life, Adam and Eve would have lived "forever" after eating the forbidden fruit. See Alma 12:21, 42:2-3 and Moses 4:31

- A righteous man's "time" on this Earth is not "cut short," according to the D&C 122:9.

- Christ's atonement was eternal, reached back in time and retro-actively saved the faithful who lived and died before the event occurred, yet they were told to wait for his coming in order to be saved. (Mormon Doctrine, 2nd ed., Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, pp. 64, 65).

- God showed his temporal prophets "everything from the beginning to the end of time", as accounts record in the Pearl of Great Price and the Book of Mormon. See stories of Nephi, Moses and Abraham. Also see D&C 101:32-34.

- The earth's lifetime is divided into "dispensations" of time. The correct name for our current dispensation of time is "Adam-ondi-Ahman" which Joseph Smith explained to mean "The place or land of God where Adam dwelt." (Mormon Doctrine, by Bru)

Geology

- Right from the scriptures, the Earth's total temporal existence is 7,000 years. See D&C 77:6

- There's more gold and mineral riches in Utah than the rest of the world combined. It's hidden from you because of a lack of faith. There's no need to go to California to pan for Gold, because God will reveal these riches to you when you are righteous enough. This was preached from the pulpit at the Tabernacle by the Prophet of the Church. See Journal of Discourses 1:264.

- Fossilized dinosaur bones are from dinosaurs that lived on other worlds that were destroyed to create the Earth. They were living creatures, but not from this Earth. (See Creation above) Taught by LDS Church Institute instructors.

- Carbon dating is phony because God has altered the Earth so many times with processes we can't understand or measure. Taught by LDS Church Institute instructors.

- The Garden of Eden was in Missouri. Noah was taken to the Old World by the Flood. This teaching was given by Joseph Smith and is still accepted as true doctrine. Given this teaching, Mormons have to accept the flood as a global phenomenon. (Mormon Doctrine, by Bruce McConkie, "Adam-Ondi-Ahman" p. 19-20)

- Prophet preaches from the Tabernacle pulpit in General Conference that "Gold and silver grow, and so does every other kind of metal, the same as the hair upon my head, or the wheat in the field.." See JoD 1:209.

Mormon Biology

- Adam and Eve did not have blood in their bodies in the Garden of Eden. The Prophet Joseph Fielding Smith taught: "Adam [and, by extension, all of the animal creation] had no blood in his veins before the fall. Blood is the life of the mortal body." After Adam partook of the forbidden fruit, blood became "the life-giving fluid in Adam's body, and was inherited by his posterity. Blood was not only the life of the mortal body, but also contained in it the seeds of death which bring the mortal body to its end. Previously the life force in Adam's body, which is likewise the sustaining power in every immortal body, was the spirit." – Joseph Fielding Smith, Man: His Origin and Destiny (Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1954), pp. 362, 376-77.

- Adam lived nearly 1,000 years and the prophets used to live hundreds of years because they lived the Word of Wisdom perfectly and had more pure blood in their veins. Over time, the human race has polluted blood more and more. Taught by LDS Church Institute instructors.

- Adam did not have a navel, Eve did. Taught by LDS Church Institute instructors.

- Mormonism directly explains the creation of at least one race by God. Mormon scripture taught that Cain was so evil, God cursed him and his lineage with black skin, creating the African race. See Moses 7:22. Mormon Doctrine explains: "Cain was cursed with a dark skin; he became the father of the Negroes, and those spirits who are not worthy to receive the priesthood are born though his lineage. He became the first mortal to be cursed as a son of perdition. As a result of his mortal birth he is assured of a tangible body of flesh and bones in eternity, a fact which will enable him to rule over Satan." Mormon Doctrine, Page 102.

- When Native Americans become Mormons, their skin turns white. The Prophet Spencer W. Kimball taught the principle of this process in a General Conference address. He stated how the "Indians are fast becoming a white and delightsome people." He said, "The [Indian] children in the home placement program in Utah are often lighter than their brothers and sisters in the hogans on the reservation… These young [Indian] members of the Church are changing to whiteness and to delightsomeness. One white elder jokingly said that he and his companion were donating blood regularly to the hospital in the hope that the process might be accelerated." LDS General Conference, October 1960, Spencer W. Kimball, (Improvement Era, December 1960, pp. 922-3). Also see the original Mormon prophesy of this effect in 2 Nephi 30:6.

- Drinking tea may tan your stomach similarly to what happens in a teapot. (Missionary teaching technique taken seriously by some).

- All races, including Blacks, Asians, Indians etc.. will be resurrected in their perfect state as white Caucasians. Taught by LDS Church Institute instructors.

A little Star that a Diamond in the Sky

an Earth-size diamond in space."

Scientists at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory tracked down the very cold and dim star. It's so cold, its carbon is crystallized, hence the giant space-diamond talk. It was first noticed when astronomers located its pulsar companion, the charmingly named PSR J2222-0137.
...
The white dwarf may well be one of the coolest ones ever observed, both temperature-wise and in terms of the envy it no doubt fosters in people who covet diamonds. The astronomers calculate its temperature at only 3,000 degrees Kelvin, which is close to 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit. That sounds pretty hot to us earthlings, but it puts it closer to ice-cube status in terms of star temps.

"It's a really remarkable object. These things should be out there, but because they are so dim they are very hard to find," says David Kaplan, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and one of the authors of a paper on the star published in The Astrophysical Journal on Friday.

A white dwarf, also called a degenerate dwarf, is a stellar remnant composed mostly of electron-degenerate matter. They are very dense; a white dwarf's mass is comparable to that of the Sun, and its volume is comparable to that of the Earth. Its faint luminosity comes from the emission of stored thermal energy.[1] The nearest known white dwarf is Sirius B, 8.6 light years away, the smaller component of the Sirius binary star. There are currently thought to be eight white dwarfs among the hundred star systems nearest the Sun.[2] The unusual faintness of white dwarfs was first recognized in 1910 by Henry Norris Russell, Edward Charles Pickering, and Williamina Fleming;[3], p. 1 the name white dwarf was coined by Willem Luyten in 1922.[4]

White dwarfs are thought to be the final evolutionary state of all stars whose mass is not high enough to become a neutron star—over 97% of the stars in the Milky Way.[5], §1. After the hydrogen–fusing lifetime of a main-sequence star of low or medium mass ends, it will expand to a red giant which fuses helium to carbon and oxygen in its core by the triple-alpha process. If a red giant has insufficient mass to generate the core temperatures required to fuse carbon, around 1 billion K, an inert mass of carbon and oxygen will build up at its center. After shedding its outer layers to form a planetary nebula, it will leave behind this core, which forms the remnant white dwarf.[6] Usually, therefore, white dwarfs are composed of carbon and oxygen. If the mass of the progenitor is between 8 and 10.5 solar masses, the core temperature is sufficient to fuse carbon but not neon, in which case an oxygen-neon–magnesium white dwarf may be formed.[7] Also, some helium white dwarfs[8][9] appear to have been formed by mass loss in binary systems.

The material in a white dwarf no longer undergoes fusion reactions, so the star has no source of energy, nor is it supported by the heat generated by fusion against gravitational collapse. It is supported only by electron degeneracy pressure, causing it to be extremely dense. The physics of degeneracy yields a maximum mass for a non-rotating white dwarf, the Chandrasekhar limit—approximately 1.4 solar masses—beyond which it cannot be supported by electron degeneracy pressure. A carbon-oxygen white dwarf that approaches this mass limit, typically by mass transfer from a companion star, may explode as a Type Ia supernova via a process known as carbon detonation.[1][6] (SN 1006 is thought to be a famous example.)

A white dwarf is very hot when it is formed, but since it has no source of energy, it will gradually radiate away its energy and cool. This means that its radiation, which initially has a high color temperature, will lessen and redden with time. Over a very long time, a white dwarf will cool to temperatures at which it will no longer emit significant heat or light, and it will become a cold black dwarf.[6] However, the length of time it takes for a white dwarf to reach this state is calculated to be longer than the current age of the Universe (approximately 13.8 billion years),[10] and since no white dwarf can be older than the age of the Universe, it is thought that no black dwarfs yet exist.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_dwarf
the Dyson sphere was the result of a thought experiment by physicist and mathematician Freeman Dyson, when he theorized that all technological civilizations constantly increased their demand for energy. He reasoned that if our civilization expanded energy demands long enough, there would come a time when it demanded the total energy output of the Sun. He proposed a system of orbiting structures (which he referred to initially as a shell) designed to intercept and collect all energy produced by the Sun. Dyson's proposal did not detail how such a system would be constructed, but focused only on issues of energy collection. Dyson is credited with being the first to formalize the concept of the Dyson sphere in his 1960 paper "Search for Artificial Stellar Sources of Infra-Red Radiation", published in the journal Science.[2] However, Dyson was not the first to advance this idea. He was inspired by the mention of the concept in the 1937 science fiction novel Star Maker,[3] by Olaf Stapledon, and possibly by the works of J. D. Bernal, Raymond Z. Gallun, and Edgar Rice Burroughs who seem to have explored similar concepts in their work.

Like Pon Farr while quite far from the Holy Star

Post by secretnude » Wed Jun 25, 2014 5:05 am

Every seven years, Vulcan males and females become aroused. They undergo a blood fever, become violent, and finally die unless they mate with someone with whom they are empathically bonded or engage in the ritual battle known as kal-if-fee.

The idea is based on the mating ritual of animals on earth, notably the female ferret that also dies if it has not mated by the end of the season.[1] In the rebooted Star Trek, Vulcans also mate outside of pon farr, and with species other than Vulcan even if not mentally bonded with them. A common misconception associated with the series (and Spock in particular) is that Vulcans only have sex once every seven years. However, pon farr is not coincident with the sex lives of Vulcans, and they are able to have intercourse without the affliction, and thus more than once every seven years.

God's spirit children

Through an unexplained procreative process involving himself and the Mother in Heaven, God the Father created spirit bodies for an innumerable number of spirit intelligences.[52] The first-born spirit child of God the Father was Jehovah, whom Latter-day Saints identify as the premortal Jesus Christ.[53][54][55] Jehovah was a God[56] and was like God the Father in attributes,[57] but he did not have an immortal physical body like God the Father until his resurrection.[58]

While these spirit bodies are composed of matter, they are described as being "more fine or pure" than regular matter

that my lust
I do really entrust
to the Holy Worms
to control
but the Holy Worms
do now seem to want
us to lose our control.

Our sexual wants
and desires
now thus aspire
to consummate
in Holy Copulation
at any rate
and I did my Holy Copulation
with my naked Holy Mate.

What would I be without my Holy Worms?

Post by secretnude » Wed Jun 25, 2014 9:24 am

I was disgusted at my Sexual Acts
due to the fact
that the Holy Worms
hath never failed to repress
our depressing
Human Worminess
until now
somehow.

I started having some doubts
about
the Holiness
of the Holy Worms

What if the Holy Worms
are simply just Symbiotic Worms
like Unholy Terran Science
claims it to be?

However, what would I be
without my Worms
that hath served as my Consciences?

Without my Worms
I would be lost
and my way of life would be lost
if I lost
my Holy Worms
that you will find
Worming
in my Mind.

Seeking answers in the Omega using an Alpha

Post by secretnude » Wed Jun 25, 2014 9:59 am

I decided to investigate
the matter of the Holy Worms
at any rate
with some Unholy Literature
that for sure
is contained in a Sentient Computer
called the Omega Computer
in the center
of this hip
Generation
Ship
called Redemption.

The Omega Computer
is Holy since it 'Does No Evil'
unlike the Evil
Beta Computers
that were used to hunt down
us Holy Worm people with a frown.

I used my Alpha Terminal
to let my mind
be read by the superior mind
of the Omega Computer to find
the answers that I desperately
need to find
at any rate.

Must Resist my Holy Worms

Post by secretnude » Wed Jun 25, 2014 11:12 am

I was wearing
absolutely nothing
except my Alpha Terminal
that was getting subliminal
traces of Holy Worm Thought
that I fought.

The Omega Computer showed me
what the
Holy Worm DNA
thus say
about its reproductive needs
and its need
to obtain new Hosts indeed.

While on Terra
the Holy Worm thus sensed
with our senses
the availability of new Hosts
but in this Comet Ship all are Hosts
of the most
Holy
of Holy Worms.

The Holy Worms
do need
to spread
and be fruitful indeed
and I do dread
possible overpopulation
in our hip
Generation
Ship
called Redemption.

Holy Experimental Neurochip

Post by secretnude » Wed Jun 25, 2014 11:25 am

I asked the Omega
using my Alpha
if it's possible to deworm
my Holy Worms
without severe
Mental Disabilities that I do fear.

The Omega was bold
and told
me of hip
Holy Neurochips
that could replace
and actually displace
the need for Holy Worms indeed.

I went to the Holy Chip Foundry
that's found
deep underground
in this hip
Comet Ship
to etch such a Holy Neurochip.

I was bold
and I told
my discovery to a Holy Medic
in the Holy Medical Bay
to have my Holy Experimental Neurochip
installed without delay
and have my Holy Worms
Dewormed.

I feel one with the Omega

Post by secretnude » Wed Jun 25, 2014 1:12 pm

I woke up in the Medical Bay
and I do say
I felt a Holy Union
with the Holy Omega
due to my Neurochip
that's quite hip
with a nice
wireless Brain Interface Device
to be one with the Omega.

The Holy Powers
of the Omega Computer
that can 'Do No Evil'
makes me do no evil
and my Holy Union
with the Holy Omega
meant that I no longer
needed an Alpha.

I returned my Alpha
to the Holy Quartermaster
that was amazed at how much faster
my thoughts were being
processed as a Hybrid Technological
and Biological
being.

Unity and Diversity

Post by secretnude » Wed Jun 25, 2014 2:03 pm

The Omega speaketh to me in my mind
and I do find
union with an enlightened
superintelligence enlightening.

It was initially a bit frightening
since I could cease
being
an individual being
but I didn't cease
to being
an individual being
since I still owned my thoughts
even if my thoughts
and the thoughts
of the Omega
do mix
and my deficiencies the Omega
thus fix.

I thought about eventually
giving up corporeality
to live in a virtual reality
created by the Omega Computer
at the center
of this hip
Generation
Ship
that I must mention
we do call Redemption.

Holy Neurochip Apologetics and Ethics

Post by secretnude » Wed Jun 25, 2014 9:21 pm

Generation Ship
staff that 'Think Critically'
became critical
Holy Worms
that had the Holy Imperative
to 'Go Forth and Multiply'
that implied
so much Holy Sex
that's quite Hexed
in Generation Ship
with limited life support
and this Ship
would soon have new life to support.

I became the Defender of the Holy Chip
against the Holy Worms
and few traded their Holy Worms
for a Holy Neurochip.

The Neurochip
thus enhanced
my reasoning skills so much by chance
that chances
are that I will win
in
Holy Neurochip
apologetics
against the Holy Worm
since I also have good ethics.

Humanity's gory past versus the 'Future'

Post by secretnude » Wed Jun 25, 2014 9:55 pm

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_Roddenberry
Roddenberry was raised as a Southern Baptist, but considered himself a humanist and agnostic. According to Ronald D. Moore, Roddenberry "felt very strongly that contemporary Earth religions would be gone by the 23rd century".
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_fandom
7,200 of the Elect are there to bear witness, and those 79 episodes are their revealed texts, the scarred tablets by which their lives here and now and beyond are charted.

Calgary Herald, describing a 1975 convention[17]
According to Michael Jindra of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the show's fandom "has strong affinities with a religious-type movement", with "an origin myth, a set of beliefs, an organization, and some of the most active and creative members to be found anywhere." While he distinguishes between Star Trek fandom and the traditional definition of religion that requires belief in divinity or the supernatural, Jindra compares Star Trek fandom to both "'quasi-religions,' such as Alcoholics Anonymous and New Age groups"—albeit more universal in its appeal and more organized—and civil religion.[41]

As with other faiths, Trekkies find comfort in their worship. Star Trek costume designer William Ware Theiss stated at a convention:

The show is important psychologically and sociologically to a lot of people. For the unusual people at this convention, it's a big part of their lives, a help to them. I'm glad there are people who need something important in their lives and I'm glad they've found it in our shows. I don't want to elaborate on that; there are just some special people here who need the show in a special way.[17]

The religious devotion of Star Trek's fans began almost immediately after the show's debut. When Roddenberry previewed the new show at a 1966 science-fiction convention, he and his creation received a rapturous response:

After the film was over we were unable to leave our seats. We just nodded at each other and smiled, and began to whisper. We came close to lifting [Roddenberry] upon our shoulders and carrying it out of the room...[H]e smiled, and we returned the smile before we converged on him.[41]

The showing divided the convention into two factions, the "enlightened" who had seen the preview and the "unenlightened" who had not.[41] The humanist Roddenberry, however, disliked his role as involuntary prophet of a religion. Although he depended on Trekkies to support future Star Trek projects, Roddenberry stated that

It frightens me when I learn of 10,000 people treating a 'Star Trek' script as if it were Scripture. I certainly didn't write Scripture, and my feeling is that those who did were not treated very well in the end ... I'm just afraid that if it goes too far and it appears that I have created a philosophy to answer all human ills that someone will stand up and cry, 'Fraud!' And with good reason.[37]

I'm not a guru and I don't want to be.

Gene Roddenberry, 1976[37]
If I was to choose between Science Fiction
and Religion
which in my opinion
is mostly man made Fiction
I will choose Science Fiction
rather than Religion
for at least being
relatively more honest
and at best
being
more awe inspiring.

Religion
has inspired
more wars
and so far
Science Fiction
hath inspired
practically
no wars
except perhaps in a metaphorical
sense between fans.

However, most Science Fiction fans
maybe in the same boat
that floats
on a vision of a better tomorrow
with less sorrow.

Many Scientists
hath been inspired by Science
Fiction to get a career in Science.

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joss_Whedon
Whedon has identified himself as an atheist, absurdist and humanist.[284][285][286] When interviewed by The A.V. Club, Whedon answered the question "Is there a God?" with one word: "No". The interviewer followed up with: "That's it, end of story, no?" Whedon answered: "Absolutely not. That's a very important and necessary thing to learn".[287][288] Talking about the exploration of religion and morality through his own work, he stated:

The meaning of life and the meaning of what we do with our lives is something that's extremely important to me. [...] One of the few times that I really got to sort of say exactly what I think about the world was in the second season of Angel. [...] [Angel] said, you know, 'Well then, this is my statement. Nothing [we do] matters, so the only thing that matters is what we do'.[285]

In April 2009, the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard University presented Whedon with the 2009 Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism.[289]

Whedon has spoken about existentialism, explaining in detail how it, and more specifically Jean-Paul Sartre's Nausea, was used as a basis for the Firefly episode "Objects in Space".[290] He called it "the most important book" he ever read,[291] and said it was handed to him right after he saw Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, whose impact, he recalls, had made him an existentialist.

J. Michael Straczynski on Religion and God
Is God Merely the Product of our Search for God?

By Austin Cline
Since ancient Greece, philosophers have noticed that the gods people believe in tend to look suspiciously like the believers. People’s gods somehow manage to share the same attributes, virtues, and vices as the believers. It’s not really a coincidence, though, is it? Believers might say that they are merely emulating what their gods want, but since not all of these gods can exist at least some (and probably all) of these cases more likely involve people creating gods in their own image.

“If I take a lamp and shine it toward the wall, a bright spot will appear on the wall. The lamp is our search for truth ... for understanding. Too often, we assume that the light on the wall is God, but the light is not the goal of the search, it is the result of the search. The more intense the search, the brighter the light on the wall. The brighter the light on the wall, the greater the sense of revelation upon seeing it.

Similarly, someone who does not search — who does not bring a lantern — sees nothing.”
“What we perceive as God is the by-product of our search for God. It may simply be an appreciation of the light ... pure and unblemished ... not understanding that it comes from us. Sometimes we stand in front of the light and assume that we are the center of the universe — God looks astonishingly like we do — or we turn to look at our shadow and assume that all is darkness. If we allow ourselves to get in the way, we defeat the purpose, which is to use the light of our search to illuminate the wall in all its beauty and in all its flaws; and in so doing, better understand the world around us.”
-- Citizen G’Kar, Babylon 5
Strictly speaking, J. Michael Straczynski didn’t say this — these words come from a character he created in the television series Babylon 5. It is a mistake to attribute to an author the words spoken by a character in their book or plays; however I don’t think that it is unreasonable to assume that the above are ideas which Straczynski at least finds interesting and worth considering — let’s not forget that he did write the above and that he is an atheist.

What are we to make of the above ideas? Personally, I find them to be a very intriguing way to look at religion. It certainly seems to explain a lot that I myself encounter. The character who spoke these words was, at the time, being treated as a religious figure. In fact, he said the above in order to explain to those who insisted on being his “followers” that he wasn’t anything very special, except perhaps that he was someone who understood that it was the light of his own search that he was perceiving.

Sadly, but not surprisingly, it didn’t seem as though any of his followers understood what he was trying to say. Perhaps they, like so many people in society, don’t really want to hear that what they are seeing is just their own shadow cast upon the wall by the light of their search for truth.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory_of_the_Cave
Plato has Socrates describe a gathering of people who have lived chained to the wall of a cave all of their lives, facing a blank wall. The people watch shadows projected on the wall by things passing in front of a fire behind them, and begin to designate names to these shadows. The shadows are as close as the prisoners get to viewing reality. He then explains how the philosopher is like a prisoner who is freed from the cave and comes to understand that the shadows on the wall do not make up reality at all, as he can perceive the true form of reality rather than the mere shadows seen by the prisoners.
http://www.skepticink.com/dangeroustalk ... -religion/
It shouldn’t surprise anyone that many of the top rated sci-fi franchises like Star Trek, Firefly, Babylon 5, and many others were created by atheists. Some even have subtle atheist themes running through them.
Science Fiction is far more compelling than religion and far more honest about being fictional too (it’s right there in the name). So what is someone going to be more interested in, Noah’s Ark or the Starship Enterprise? Which seems more believable? Which is more motivational? Which is more inspirational? I’ll go with Star Trek over the Bible any day. It isn’t even a contest.
When people started to form a religion around Star Wars, it quickly gained support because Jedi are way cooler than Jesus ever could be. Sci-fi does it better. What does it do better? As the new Kahn put it, “Everything!”
So when people are young and impressionable religion is quick to try to indoctrinate, but if the young person is exposed to science fiction at a young age, religion just seems less interesting. Young people love lightsabers and starships. It gets them away from thinking about the mythical stories of our ancient past and more focused on the possibilities and potential that await in humanity’s future.
