Please increase the PM mailbox quotas

Postby Algernon Sydney is Dead » Sat May 04, 2013 8:07 am

Since DC is hosting its own forum now, it's not limited to the quotas imposed by the free service.

Having a 50-message limit is too restricting. (I can't chew-out Strawman with any fewer than 60 PM's!)

Can we get this limit raised to 100 -- at least for moderators and admins? I can't imagine that the PM system is overloading the DB right now.

PS: I would have made this a PM, but I'm running low on space. ;)

Can't you just do what I do, and delete them?

  1. Some things you want to save.
  2. Trying to send to other users, especially Mods and admins, who don't delete PM's rigorously, causes bounces when their inbox fills up.
  3. Increasing the quota costs nothing, now that we're self hosted, but can save on housekeeping costs (time, hassle) to users.
  4. My parole officer requires an audit trail.

An EM Pulse event would do all that, and so much more.

Well, I could argue about slim databases being happy databases, but then I'd have to argue that people should post to the forum then, either. :D
I've increased it to 100, and changed it so that if the mailbox is full, and old message is deleted to allow a new incoming message, rather than a bounce.

100 doesn't seem much better.

For admins/moderators an email gateway to PMs would seem really obvious but there's nothing. I found a few email/forum gateway but that was for mailing lists and forums which is not the same thing.

Looking at the PM interface there's a CSV download, but that's kind of awful. Maybe if you could automate it, but still, reading PMs in a spreadsheet hardly seems like an improvement. All the RSS links are for the forum as a whole, not for the PM folder you're looking at.

What would be really nice is a PM/pop3 gateway. Even if you could just save PMs in an email folder but have to reply using the PM interface it would be an improvement I suspect.

As a moderate user of PM's, on this forum, 100 is loads better. You still have to do some housekeeping, but the frequency is more tolerable.

But, yes, a one-way PM to SMTP relay would be nice. That is, the full text of each PM should be emailed to the appropriate parties, unless they have that option turned off.

This seems like a "nice ta" feature, not a priority.
