Is this story a Dream or is it Real?

I had a bizarre dream last night that would probably be worth a post on the drabblecast forums in itself. In the dream, part of it involved telling people a sci-fi story that felt like an actual, real story I heard somewhere.

The gist of it was a colony ship arrives at a star with a hollow planet, they're stuck there, presumably due to a lack of fuel. So they make the best of what they've got. setting up the colony is wrought with strife, the colonists must battle the hostile environment of the planet, they fight with each other over resources, they eventually fight of an alien invasion, and once they're through all their trials and have set up an impressive civilization in their new home, they discover the sun is about to collapse into a black hole and destroy everything they've built. They now have the resources to build a new ship to escape, but there isn't enough time, and they're eventually wiped out.

Has anyone heard of anything remotely similar to this or did I dream it up within another dream, Inception style? :)

Moral of the story: It pays to survey the stars you plan to colonize for imminent collapse.

ROU, is that any way to answer a 2nd post? We who learned that lesson long ago must be deferential to the recent hatchlings.

Evolution13, I am not familiar with your plot, but it would be surprising if I had, as if we were both from Pittsburgh, and both knew Joe Zebjik. However, in principle, any such movie that didn't cover a span of 10,000 years or so, would not be a realistic movie. Something akin to The Foundation series.

* Q: Hollow planet such as Geode?

Don't stress Strawman, I wasn't put off! The more I think about it the more I think I must have made it up. It'd be awfully depressing if it was! if it turns out it's not based on anything then I give the idea to the community to try to turn it into a coherent story. I don't have the patience to try myself.

Also it was more of a pulp fiction hollow earth style hollow planet. If there's a fictional hollow planet called Geode I'm not familiar with it, but it's definitely something I wanna read!

The hollow planet reminds me a bit of the Shell-Worlds in "Matter" by Iain M. Banks.

Geode as in the hollow mineral formation.

The only hollow planets that come to mind for me would be that episode of Futurama that introduced Nibbler, or the Frank Key bit about the planet filled with nougat. Otherwise, it has shades of random bits of Clarke and Asimov to it, but nothing specific.

You should write it up - what better way to complete the dream-within-a-dream effect than by bringing it all the way into the so-called "real" world?

Might wanna work on the ending. Add some ray of hope perhaps.

"And then they died" is kind of a letdown for the reader.

Especially when they discover they are your main character.

This conversation leaves me with a feeling of the most ancient deja vu.

How do you know that this discussion of the dream isn't a dream?

ROU, could you pick up that broken mirror for me?

Don't worry, you're just a butterfly.
