What's Your Drink?

Postby Varda » Tue Dec 31, 2013 11:43 pm

It's New Year's Eve, the universal drinking holiday, and I've got a fridge stocked with excellent craft beer to look forward to in the next few hours! So I'm wondering, what's your beverage of choice?

Right now, I'm drinking "5 Golden Rings" from The Bruery, which is a nice golden ale with sorta a pineapple aftertaste. Yum!

Better to lie than disappoint:

My cellar contains a fine assortment of Italian reds. I plan to decant a nice Enrico Berlinguer this evening.

What, the politician? That certainly answers my second question, which is, where do you keep the bodies if you keep the wine in the cellar?

I miss good Italian wines. Cheers, my friend!

In the meantime, I've moved on to "He Said, He Said" from 21st Amendment Brewery, a Belgian Tripel. That plus pizza and Mass Effect 3 is shaping up to be a good New Year's Eve. Prost!

Enrico is singing in his cups

Mein Hut, der hat drei Ecken,
Drei Ecken hat mein Hut,
Und hätt er nicht drei Ecken,
So wär es nicht mein Hut

* waydaminim * That doesn't sound like an Italian red.

Whoa, that song brings back memories! When I was first learning German, I liked to write lame parodies of that 'un.

Mein bier, der hat ein Enrico!
Ein Enrico hat mein bier!
Und hatt er nicht ein Enrico,
so war es nicht mein bier!

Sounds like you celebrated New Year's good 'n proper, my friend. :D Hey, isn't it great that we now have a thread for drunken posting? This is exactly what the forums have been missing... :P

I'm toasting the end of a particularly long week with a Belgian-style quad from Jopen called Doubting Thomas. It's got a distinctive anise flavor to it, I'd definitely recommend!

And now for two random DC-related stories this week:

1. I mentioned "Flying on the Hatred of my Neighbor's Dog" in the comments section of a blog entirely unrelated to podcasts or short stories, and quite randomly, the actual story author showed up and started talking about it! Small world. Also, I learned that she's the same person who wrote "Punk Voyager", which automatically puts her near the top of my favorite living short story authors.

2. Me own dad started listening to the DC recently, and by complete coincidence started on the episode that kicks off "In Search of the Brain-eating Nandi Bear", which he found so strangely compelling that he listened to more episodes just to see how things were going to turn out for Connor. I'm verklempt.

Well, we're snowed in, so I'm calling it an early Friday-night beer time! Drinking a nice pineappley Belgian Ale from the Bruery (damn you, California, and your universally tasty beers!) and watching the snow (a rare treat round here).

Word on the street is that things are really bad up in Atlanta right now. Got friends stranded at various points on the highway home, teachers stuck for the night with their students at school, etc. Athens seems to be just outside the disaster-bubble; we've got an inch or two, but the streets are clear so far. No problems for anyone getting home, at least to my knowledge.

Hope this finds everyone safe and warm. Take care, y'all.

This must be how Minnesotans feel about us in Indiana.
It's bee HIGH of 2F during the day here. Lows at night -15F. Ground hasn't been free of snow in more than a month.
I feel for you, where you truly aren't prepared for cold weather. In New Orleans they have 1 snow plow. Ouch.

That's just to clear the streets the morning after Mardi Gras.

Folks still tell the awe-inspiring legend of Boudreaux Thibideau , South Central lead salesman for Sneaux Plaughs Inc, who sold that Plaugh to the Big Easy.

He got canned when it came to light that the $400,000 unit sale was the result of a $450,000 contribution to the campaign of Mayor Heauxy Longue.

Boudreaux had used the company floor model for a Mardi Gras float for 10 years of laissez-ing le bon temps rouler, writing the Plaugh down to near-Zero book value. Then took the inflated sales proceeds and used them to pay the bribe.

Boudreaux got the shitcan when his wife got loud drunk and called the Mayor's wife "so stupid she married a man who'd use a parade float to plow snow."

All Nola held their breath for a month, waiting for the other shoe to drop. But Boudreaux got a call from the Feds, and now he's got hisself a new wife, and a nice job running asset swaps at the Fed.

Tonight's beverage is an Abbey Ale from Ommegang, which will pair nicely with the (likely terrible) Judge Dredd remake on Netflix and some grueling administrative grunt work!

The snow and ice finally started melting today, so it looks like the impromptu 7-day weekend is nigh at an end. Just in time for the weekend, hey! And good riddance; cabin fever is setting in. I'm dying to go for a run. Hopefully tomorrow.

Anyone else get snowed/iced in this week? Strawman, did the storm make it down that far south? I hear the northeast is up next...

Tuesday morning found me shivering in North Myrtle Beach, watching a bunch of weather forecasters predict the world's immanent demise. I cut my trip short and rode the cold wave down I-95 til the temps hit 60. It went down to about 40 here Wednesday, but no snow days. (Sorry for all the teachers and kids).

Tonight's beverage: Lemonade

This WEEK?? How about this last month?? It went above freezing today for the first time in several weeks. :D
Not trying to belittle you folks down south. I heard some birds today. I swear they were chirping! First I've heard in a while. Spring is coming I say! If it gets to 40, it will feel like 70.

I don't know how I missed the lemonade comment, Tom, but that made me smile!

As for Georgia snow vs. Indiana... okay, yeah, yours is bigger. :P

BUT! BUT! Did I mention we had an earthquake last night? SO THERE, TOP THAT!

Strawman, did you guys get the earthquake too? Glad you missed out on the snow storm, at least - everything shut down for a week here, which was fun for about the first day. It was awesome to make it out for a nice run yesterday, see the sun again.

As long as somebody from Minnesota doesn't pop into this conversation, I'm ok. :D

Yea I saw your earthquake on twitter. Kinda neat to see it reported like that.

I'm having one of my favorite beers tonight, Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro. Cheers!

It was a pretty outstanding, if craaaaazy, weekend in Varda-land. Got some potentially exciting news related to my writing. Hung out with my friend from Pseudopod's staff on Saturday at the Terrapin Brewery and talked about SF stories. Now trying to play catch-up on all the responsible stuff that piled up in the meantime. :)

Whatcha guys up to? How was everyone's week/weekend?

Awesome!

For me, life has been borderline hell for the last week, but I'm digging back out. And I just got back from the Lego movie. Fucking AWESOME. Wow such heart and humor. There are so many levels to that movie, and it's just so heart warming. Masterpiece.

People keep saying that about the Lego movie, and I keep getting more and more agog. Then again, the new "My Little Pony" TV series also turned out to be ridiculously better than it had a right to be, so maybe those toy companies are onto something nowadays...
