Flash Contests at Escape Artists
Flash Contests at Escape Artists
I just wanted to plug the new flash fiction contests that will be rolling out over at the Escape Artists forums. There will be a contest for each podcast over the next few months. PodCastle is up first, accepting submissions starting April 1st. The stories will be posted anonymously and voted for by forum members.
Two entries per contest, 500 word max. So think of it as 5 drabbles, or like 20 twabbles or so. Here's the link to the official rules.

Hm, interesting. I think I'll have to wait for the EP thing because I don't have any story ideas for Fantasy or Horror in those lengths. The prizes for winning are quite awesome.

Don't make me throw a ball of yarn at you...moonowl wrote:Man, I wish i could write!
Maybe you are right, and your brain is full of insipid boring prose no one would ever want to read.
Or maybe it's not that you can't write, it's just that you don't write, instead doing other things.
Either way, there's a good solution to the desire to write.
(I only toss this out because up to the age of 29 I used to often say "Man, I wish I could write." Then from 30-45 or so I didn't because my first attempt coincided with other more pressing issues.
In the end, while I may have proved to myself (and the rest of the world) that I'm no Billy the Shakes, I at least have gotten over that internal "Man, I wish I could write!" dialog.
Still working on "Man, I wish I could write well" though, but practice helps.

Yeah, what better place to practice writing than the Drabblecast forums, or a contest like the ones coming up at EA. Even if you don't think you will win, It's fun and you may just get some useful feedback. Regardless, it's practice.

Heck, moonowl, they're right.
You don't say, "Man I wish I could weave good selvages" and let that keep you from weaving. And the expression 'spinning a yarn' isn't just a coincidence. The very Fates themselves are Spinners.
Pick out your most intriguing warp yarns, configure an interesting heddle count pattern, then pull in that weft. If you go for organic pigments and alpaca, I bet you'll produce something uniquely you: a sweater that will warm hundreds or thousands at a time.

I am keen on this one.
I shall have to kick Mr. Writer's Block to the curb and climb back on that ol' keyboard.
