I grinned as the shot from my particle cannon crossed the Rio Grande, the shockwave slicing through the water before smashing into the immense ten-gallon hat on the head of the thirty-foot tall mechanoid there. The enemy pilot must have panicked, because his bot’s arms flew into a frenzy, trying to pull off the rapidly melting hat.

My next shot made it a moot point.

“Great shot, Espinoza,” came the Lieutenant’s voice over the static-y hiss of the radio. “You’re one hell of a marksman.”

“It’s nothing,” I replied, lifting my robot’s giant sombrero. “I just can’t stand Tex mechs.”
