Philip K. Dick
You know how we celebrate H.P.Lovecraft month every year? Well, I'm not suggesting we do a full month on PKD, (not that he doesn't deserve it) but a PKD tribute episode would fit very well on the drabblecast, imho.
After all, is there really a stranger author of stranger stories in the history of strangeness? (Maybe yes, maybe no, but one thing is for certain, such a debate is a reasonable one to engage in.)
That being said, here is a link to PKD stories that are in the public domain.
http://www.philipkdickfans.com/2012/04/ ... k-stories/
My first 3 choices would be (in no particular order)
Beyond Lies the Wub (A classic PKD short story with a classic PKD title)
Second Variety (The PKD estate should have sued the creators of "The Terminator" for blatant plagiarism, (instead Harlan Ellison sued them for plagiarism, and won, for a story that bears NO resemblence to The Terminator.) Also, the movie "Screamers" was based on this story, (and falls into my list of less-than-stellar PKD adaptations.
The Golden Man, (A wonderful story about mutants that was horribly mangled by Nicholas Cage in the movie "Next."
Edit: PKD: December 16, 1928 - March 2, 1982

For giggles, and in the spirit of reducing clutter, I did this. Not sure it fits well, anywhere since you (re)started this topic from scratch.ROU Killing Time wrote:Maybe somebody with moderator privs could do that.Algernon Sydney is Dead wrote:Sounds good. Say the word and I'll delete the first 4 posts, that are now in this thread -- So that the thread starts with your revised sales pitch.

Anywho, I remember reading some Dick, decades ago, and going "Meh" -- preferring Heinlein, Asimov, etc. But I have to admit that his stories make for some fine-ass movies when given the right director.
So, they might make excellent Drabblecast fodder. Surely Norm can do a better job than some piker named Steven Spielberg. (After all, that guy needs the crutch of them fancy "moving pictures" to tell a story.)

Minority Report was almost a good PKD adaptation. (If they had just left out the extended 45 minute mario brothers chase scene in the middle of the movie)Algernon Sydney is Dead wrote:Anywho, I remember reading some Dick, decades ago, and going "Meh" -- preferring Heinlein, Asimov, etc. But I have to admit that his stories make for some fine-ass movies when given the right director.

Otherwise, in many ways it captured the feel pretty good.
A Scanner Darkly was a nearly direct copy of the book, (and it was amazing how well Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrellson and Keanu Reeves were able to so perfectly mimic three dudes stoned out of their minds jabbering away in the living room til all hours.)
They were really stretching their acting muscles there.

(Haven't seen the new Total Recall, although the buzz was that it was worse than the original. My mind reels at how they pulled THAT off. I rank Total Recall against other Ahnold movies, not against other works of PKD fiction.)

(And no, ASID, leave the thread as it it. Anyone who isn't willing to try and decode a little out of sync and/or context posting from me has probably given up on me long ago.)
I suppose you could rename the thread, "Hey Norm, how about ya lay some Dick on us" but that might be misinterpreted.

A Scanner Darkly was not a Spielberg film. If you're gonna go that route, why no love for Blade Runner? "All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain."

I watched Blade Runner for the very first time a year ago. I can see how, if I had watched it 20 years ago, I'd be very impressed. Now, not so much.

Much love for brade runner. Tom. Did you see the directors cut or the version with the shitty Sam Spade voiceover? It makes a big difference.the voiceover ruins the long futurist panorama's that give the movie a dystopian 2001 feel.

ASID, I got mad at spielberg when the jet pack bbq'd the burgers on the grill at the start of the chase. The rest if the movie (the HUD UI, the Halo's, the whole precrime unit and max von sydow intrigue, the organ-legger eye transplant? That was all groovy.)

Geez. You could say the same thing about 2001: A Space Odyssey, or Caligula, or All Quiet on the Western Front, or maybe even Star Wars (the original -- with no episode number, and none of the 3-D, Greedo-shot-first, crap that Lucas has foisted on us since).tbaker2500 wrote:I watched Blade Runner for the very first time a year ago. All ground-breaking entertainment and still worth a watch (even if only with your MST3K buddies).

Directors cut.
Don't get me wrong, I have plenty I things I consider epic, which don't hold up to modern scrutiny. Like Hero's Quest 2.
