Re: Fiction? (Journal --ish)

My quibble was with the singularity of "a" modifying the plurality of "sorts". "of many sorts" would be fine, or "of a sort". But "of a sorts" clogs the pool filter. It's a hokeyism that I think would work well in a different context, but it doesn't fit with the tone of the rest of the piece. Other...

Re: My Career as a Travel Agent Was Not a Long One (Tourism)

I was expecting you to re-enact some scenes from RoboCop (with live ammunition, of course). That would surely end your career as a travel agent, but it might get you a new career as a police officer in some cities.

Good stuff.

But I can't believe it still uses drive letters.

And why is my brain drive D:? What is drive C:?

Re: Who's Going to Pay for That? (Tourism/Most Irritating Th

Thank you, folks! Varda, I did call it a "discovery" rather than an "invention." But it does seem to only afflict Earth... for now. I'm glad you enjoyed my word choice. I originally called the humans "those little bipedal things bipedaling around," but I had to sacrifice most of that to get it into ...

Re: Addiction (Journal theme...kind of)

Welcome to the wild world of drabbling! This is cool. I am not entirely sure I understand what's happening, but I have enough of an idea that the story makes an impression. What I can't tell for sure is whether this is about an underground blood market or if there is a vampire secretly volunteering ...

Re: The Enchanter's Legacy

Welcome, tarmo! Nice piece. I'm in almost complete agreement with ASID, though--more showing, less telling, fewer adjectives. Lovecraft built himself a legacy with no ability to write dialogue and tons of the blandest adjectives he could think of, but I wouldn't bet on the same thing happening to an...

Re: The Octopus Train (Relocation/Tourism)

This one is rather disconcerting. The juxtaposition of hands and tentacles, skin and slime, is disorienting. I normally would say that telling a story in second person should be reserved for extraordinary circumstances, but I think this might be one of those circumstances. It is hard to tell where t...

Who's Going to Pay for That? (Tourism/Most Irritating Thing)

I wish I had been a vacuum miner like my third father. I hate this tourism job. “Welcome to Earth,” I say. “Those bipedaling things are humans.” I look at Kpppphtran'il, the caretaker for this sector and the highlight of my cycle. I am admiring her bulging diplopods when I hear an Earthly scream. “P...

Re: World Heritage Tours (Tourism Theme)

Everybody's workin' for the weekend! I like this. An interesting kind of post-apocalyptic landscape in the aftermath of... corporate wars? That's a more blatant species of honesty than we get 'round here. I assume this is also the reason for the vehicles being called "prisonpods." No real need to su...

Re: The Final Commute

Oh, man. There is nothing that feels better than falling asleep at the wheel, getting that little bit of rest when you really need it, and nothing more frightening than waking up and realizing you were asleep at the wheel. I mean, theoretically. Not that it's ever happened to me. This is an excellen...

Re: Blown Cover (Relocation)

I like the explanation of what happened at the farmer's market... "comic mischief ensues." But the dialogue before that doesn't quite work for me, at least not in a drabble. I think it would be a perfectly fine scene in a longer short story, though. I would like to hear more about Tiberius's previou...

Re: Not From Around Here

Thanks. I was hoping it wasn't too subtle. I've had this image in my head for a couple of years now of a dog sitting around chewing on a suspiciously large bone. I kept trying to build a story around it but nothing I thought of felt right. Finally, last night, I decided it would work as a drabble, a...
